Joined this forum back in 2016 and finally became an owner last month: picked up a Black 2012 with 81K miles and some nice accessories.
For years I’ve been randomly watching Craigslist/FB/Forum for a GEN1, higher miles, close to home, good price etc and this one hit the mark.
In my many yrs of riding, this is my first 2-cyl, first black bike, and first with ABS. My other bike is an ’05 FJR1300 non-ABS which, coincidently, also has 81K miles.
First impressions: the Super T feels big and roomy (bar/seat/peg) compared to the FJR (I’m tall), love the 6 spd, wind blast/noise is terrible (easy fix), and the clutch basket rattle/vibes at 3K are quite noticeable.
The FJR has spoiled me with its smooth and abundant power so this is quite an adjustment… the ST is a very different beast with its 2 cylinders and lumpy firing order.
Otherwise, it needed tires, a good clean up and the ABS light is ON so that could be expensive if the pump unit is toast (I knew that going in…).
So, over the past 6 weeks, I’ve cleaned/lubed lever pivots, checked plugs, air-cleaner, TB synch, bled brakes/clutch, shaft drive splines, new Shinko 705s and a taller v-stream windshield.
Next up is an oil change and I just scored a GEN2 clutch basket from another member...

Mr. BR

Hi @Mr. BR and congrats on your new ride.
Are you planning to keep both?
I’m wondering if that they may “overlap” on which should one take, for example, on a long trip.
(I hope this makes sense - English is not my native language).

Congrats on the new (to you) '12. Sounds like a good plan for repairs and clutch basket replacement. That, along with a Graves manual CCT made my previous '12 a nice machine. I upgraded to an '18 Tenere when a "too good to pass up" deal came my way...got cruise control too! ;)

Can't tell from your pic but winglets are a worthwhile addition for improved cockpit air management.

Enjoy. It's not an FJR (which is why I have both!) but the Ten fulfills its mission.

Welcome, from Texas.

Hey, @Paletes3. While you're waiting for his reply, my opinion on which one to take on a trip is first, what kind of trip. There is a lot of overlap between the two. But the type of roads you're going to be traveling on depends on which one to take. If you're going to be traveling pavement at 75mph or more only, hands down the FJR. The power of the FJR is fantastic. But if you're going to be on bad pavement or dirt, with speeds under 75mph, go with the Tenere. Yes, there are guys on here that have taken their FJ/FJRs on rough roads, but if you have a choice, pick the right tool for the job.

Mr BR, this might be of use for the basket swap. Includes a how to along with torque values. And, welcome.

Thank you, Boris. That's a very nice explanation of the process.
I do have a Yamaha Service Manuel and I actually did the swap last night before I saw your note...
No issues with the swap except getting the universal hub tool to hold in place while getting the nut to 90 ft. lbs was a little difficult.. that other option pictured in your link would probably work better for tightening (no issue loosening the nut). The "new" clutch was from a 2014 with ~41K miles and everything measured within spec so I used everything except my old inner hub that didn't come with the '14 unit. The springs on the old unit are very loose and the engine does seem a bit quieter at idle. However, the real test will be a test ride tomorrow morning....
Thanks again for the link.

Last post on this and a few answers:
I’ve had the FJR for almost 9 yrs now and it’s going to stay… I simply like it too much.
However, I was itching to work on something new and the ST was a deal I couldn’t pass it up… but long-term ownership is TBD.
There is definitely some overlap on these two… the FJR is smooth/fast while the ST is roomy and comfortable w/ some off road capability and both will work for my mostly local riding needs.
The tall v-stream windshield is a huge improvement (I do have the side “wings”) and the upgraded clutch basket makes a very noticeable reduction in the vibes going through 3K revs…
I just rode it from San Jose to Auburn this past weekend (took long way through Placerville via hwy 88, 49) and it works well on at freeway speeds, seems good at 4000 rpms (indicated 78mph, a bit optimistic).
Regards,
Mr. BR

Congrats on the S10 addition! I picked a 2012 up 2 years ago myself. I just installed the Graves Manual CCT today and it is definitely more quiet at startup than before. I am currently looking for the 2014 clutch basket myself. You can definitely hear the spring rattle on the original basket. Good luck on the rest of your mods.
