I grew up with motorcycles in the 70's and 80's, but had not ridden for a while. I retired in 2014, and last year my son bought a bike, renewing my interest in riding, so I took a safety course to reestablish my license. I have always been intrigued with the adventure bikes (usually BMWs) when we come across them in our travels. One of the safety course instructors had both an older BMW 1200 and a newer Triumph Tiger 800. In doing research I came across the Super Tenere as another alternative. I have test ridden both the Tiger 800 and the Super Tenere, and while concerned with the weight, I definitely came back with the biggest smile on the S10. So smooth and solid. While I feel like I should ride the BMW to complete the research, I'm not sure I could justify the higher price. Living in Illinois, I will likely wait for spring at this point. I am most interested in the 2nd Gen's and I am also interested in what might change in the 2016's.

Welcome aboard! Given Yamaha's 3-5 year refresh cycle, I wouldn't expect to see any changes before the 2017 model year, and then they are usually incremental improvements (the cycle seemed shortened here in the US since we didn't get the bikes until the 2012 MY).

That's if they come out with a 17 model?
I wish these guys would publicly promote there bikes and not just in magazines, as well as have a Demo to try.
My triumph dealer handed me the keys to anything that was a demo to take out and ride the hell out of it, 1200, 800, multistrada and anything that was on the used lot.
I was sold on my Tiger 1050 the first time I rode it, I came back from a ride once on the 1200 tiger and was gone for over an hour, the sales guy says to me "your back already". ::008::

My best test rides were on used units at a non-Yamaha dealer, in rural Illinois. The first S10 I looked at was at my original Yamaha Dealer in Iowa. It was raining that day, but they did offer a ride any time I was back. Their mechanic, who has 65K+ miles on his 2012, showed me all kinds of pictures of his ride north of the artic circle in Alaska.

Must have been Fairfield Iowa and Steve Reno. He is now well over 100K.

Yes it was Steve. Looks like he is a regular and founding member on this forum. I sent him a PM. Great spokesman for the Super Tenere.

Welcome from another IL member, about an hour south of Springfield. I had one of the pre order 2012's and loved it and now have a 2014 Gen 2 ES and love it even more. As for the 2016's the only changes are color.

Yamaha kills losers after about the second year, and is doing the same minimal-marketing for the Tenere they've done for the FJR1300.
That bike's been around for 14 years.

The WR250R gets almost no marketing dollars either.
Since 2008.

Etc.

Welcome aboard holligl

Welcome Glen It was great meeting you.
I need to check in here more often, I might have missed you if you didn't PM me.
I would recommend a 14 or newer also. They made a lot of nice improvements.
I sure like my 2012 though. My wife keeps telling me to just keep my 12 and buy a new one also. Just this weekend she said "I need a new bike to ride on, this one has scuffs on it" I told her them are war scars.
If you ever want to meet up for a ride , you can test ride my bike all you want.

Steve,

Your wife have a twin sister? :)
My wife threatened to divorce me if I bought another bike after I had the crash with the Volvo wagon on the Tiger 1050.
Not even a month later limping with a cane I in Denver pulling the trigger on my 2012 Tenere.
She wasn't happy but we are still married three years have gone since then.
I told her about two months ago before I was laid off I wanted a 650 Enduro to do single track work.
Her reply was don't push your luck mister!! ;)

No twin sister.
My wife has been riding bikes with me long before we were married.
She bought herself an XR75 when we were kids and a TY175 Yamaha that we still have.
She bought a KZ 305 belt drive to ride to work then sold it when our daughter was born.
Then she switched to ATVs and was one of the fastest Blaster riders on MX tracks that I know of. then got a Raptor 350 that she now has.
She must have about 250,000 miles sitting behind me on the roads.
She is a life long rider and understands what the passion is.
I'm keeping her. :p

Welcome!
The Tenere would be a great choice but would you expect to hear less on this forum?
Just a suggestion, if you are going to wait until spring to make your purchase, you might also take a look at the (new to the US) Honda Cross Tourer which should be on showroom floors in April. -JEP-
