Just introducing myself here, long time rider hoping to purchase a Tenere in the near future...

I have had all sorts of dirt & street bikes over the years, currently have an 08 Yamaha Warrior and a 1992 Yamaha TDM850. The TDM has changed my style of riding drastically, I really love the bike.. just want more of it, if you know what I mean. Ever since me and my wife put about 1,000 miles on the TDM this summer up in Nova Scotia I have been drooling over the thought of upgrading to a Tenere. I have also played with the idea of the FJR1300, but I really want the flexibility to take on any roads that we come across and a more upright riding position, hence the Tenere.

I am debating how to go about buying one right now, there are plenty of good deals for 12-13 models out there and some have all sorts of panniers, crash bars, etc. loaded up on them... but I have read enough to know that the 2014+ has a lot of advantages that would likely require another $1,500 worth of upgrades to bring the 13' models up to being similar ( ECU flash, clutch basket, cam chain tensioner, etc. ) So I am tentatively keeping an eye out for a decent 14-15 model to snatch up when everything works out.

I have one question, to those who bought the Tenere to do a lot of two up riding/ touring... did you spring for the ES model or suggest just upgrading the suspension to suit the load needs? Stoltec moto actually isnt far from me, I have read he is the guy to talk to about accomodating heavier loads on the Tenere...

Welcome aboard.

Went for the 2014 standard and then spent a little time setting it up to get to know the settings alone and for 2-up. Pretty easy. When the suspension wears out I'll go aftermarket, but I sold the last Tenere with 50,000 miles on OEM suspension.

Welcome Mrkyamaha,

I just purchased the 2016 and like you had the FJR on my short list. I went with the S10 due to the ability to do a few non-paved roads when riding around the country, so far in limited miles I think it'll be a great bike. Related to getting deals, a day after I plunked down the money to get a new one (seems like the dealers are starting to really drop the price in the 16's now that the '17's are out since the ES model I purchased was listed at $13,999) I noticed a used 2016 ES with 173 miles on it for around $12K on eBay. In other words, do a little shopping, be patient and I'm sure you'll find a good one at a great price.

Welcome,

I have one of the original gen 1's with around 40k miles on it. Upgraded the clutch basket, had the tensioner replaced under warranty and upgraded the suspension from stoltec. Other than a bunch of additional farkles and regular maintenance, the bike has been great.

I'm sure you'll find a 2nd gen for a good price. By the way, I'm in Newtown. Great riding here in Bucks County :)

btw - The weekend (May 6) before Mothers Day is a big Camp-N-Ride at Romney WV. It's the subject of other threads here and on ADVRider.

I spent another few hours researching last night and I think I am gonna go for the 14-15 model, the 16' in Yellow is incredibly tempting and I dont mind the 13k prices I have found... but I will never get over that $500 freight charge crap, such a nonsense charge to add to buy a brand new bike...

Hey Koinz, yes we have fantastic riding here in Bucks County, especially Upper Bucks where I reside in the small town of Perkasie.
