Hello Tuareg,

I just picked up a 2012 ST with 2K miles. It has been sitting unused for the last year. It is flawless expect for one scratch on the plastic exhaust shield. As soon as I got it home, I did an oil/filter change as it looked a bit grungyt. After a few days, I changed the final drive oil, and it looked really dark and nasty. Which made me wonder what kind of 600 miles tune-up the PO did. He told me he followed the instructions in the manual, but didn't have any documentation for any of the work.

I decided to do a comprehensive 600 miles tune-up, plus the extended/yearly based stuff like brake/clutch/coolant. what else do I need to worry about ?
At some point I will call the local dealer and see if there are any recalls on it, and what not.

The bike is running great, and it has plenty of power. I was a bit concerned about some of the reviews complaining about lack of power, but i am thinking that they don't know how to ride, or are afraid to twist the throttle. It is not a GSXR, but it can hang with any of the big trail bike with ease. i came from an R1200GS, and I don't think it has any more power, if anything the ST has a wider power curve. I am happy just riding around in "T" mode, and I only switch to "S" if I need to chase somebody down.

future mods:
hard cases (undecided model)
Yoshimura Signature exhaust
PilotRoad4s as soon as the stock DWs go
Heated grips (in the fall)
windshield (still researching)
fork springs (possibly)

If there are any riders in the Portland/OR area that want to hookup, feel free to drop me a line.

cheers!

Two items for the dealer to run your vin# for; the early bikes had a recall for a possible twisted o-ring seal on the fuel pump, very few pump seals leaked, but they wanted to be sure... and most recently the wiring harness in the head light assembly needs to be replaced. Oh, and you probably shouldn't mount a heavily used top box on the oem rack, won't take the abuse.

Welcome datjackal and congrats on the new bike. There seems to be a bunch of us ST riders up here in the PNW. There's a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/508180775912122/ that you should checkout. Most announcements there are also posted here in the PNW regional forum.

One cool event coming up soon is the Central Cascades Ride on Aug. 15-16. See this site for more info:

I'm often off sailboat racing in the summer but have plenty of free time to ride the rest of the year. I'm up in Sandy close to some great roads on Mt. Hood. Let me know if you need any help with farkeling your bike. I got mine and $2800 later, it was just about right. <grin>

I know about the headlight harness, but did not know about the fuel pump, that is good to know, I will have to follow up on that right away then.

Talking about dealers, I am really close to Tigrad Yamaha, should I go there for that work, or can you recommend another shop ?

No worries about the top case, I won't use one, heck the plate is not on the bike anymore :)

Greetings from Texas and congrats on the new machine. One other farkle you might consider are the OEM winglets. They make a big differnce in reducing buffeting at speed.

One great way to help with the decision is to show up for one of the group events. At a ride a few months ago I was able to see the OEM, Happy Trails, Touratech, Jesse, and Holan Nomada cases all side by side. I ultimately went with Bumot, your welcome to stop by and have a look if you end up considering those.

@krussell

The Bumot bags are the ones that I am leaning towards the most. I have some friends with TT bags (on GSes), and those are super nice, but the integration seems to be much nicer on the Bumot ones at a fraction of the cost. Thanks for extending an offer to show me yours, I will take you up on the shortly.

Anybody out here interested in a "chowder run" after work during the week ? I am thinking leaving West of Portland (say North Plains) around 5:30PM or so, and riding to the beach for some Clam Chowder. Days are long, and we can easily be back before sunset.

I did the unthinkable (for me) yesterday. I ordered the Yoshi (signature series) pipe. I have other more pressing needs, but I decided to just do it, and worry about the other stuff later. The bike is running great, but I can't stand it anymore, the stock pipe is even uglier then stock R1200GS.

PS. Yoshimura has 2 pipes for the XT1200Z, one is the "street" series, and the other one is the "signature" series. With the baffles in, the Signature series is quieter (80 vs 83 db)then the Street series. it is the DOT approved. I like quiet, so it was the easy choice for me even though it was another ~$30.

I used a dremel tool to cut it back and the painted it. Looks much better and follows the lines of my Holan Pannier Racks.
