Wait a second. That's cool!
You could use the FT tool and reprogram that "neutral" programming, then access that neutral programming as a 3rd "mode" via the clutch switch?

Clever, indeed.
Yup, precisely.

There are some limitations. S and T mode have different throttle, engine braking and timing maps for each gear. Clearly "neutral" does not.

What needs to be remembered when playing with the ECU is that the ECU is not "smart". It doesn't "think". It simply does what it is programmed to do. The "output" is based on the "inputs".

If guys wanted a cheap alternative to the CJM, I could basically "flash" the ECU with the CJM mod WITHOUT the timing restrictions.

That would give S mode a 1:1 throttle ratio in all gears, no timing restriction or crazy advance, and a stock T mode.

I'd be willing to do it for a moderate fee to help me cover the cost of the standalone flashing setup.

My experimentation with the clutch switch jumper showed a MPG drop at steady cruise, so I'm sold that the switch does more than change the throttle delay.
Assuming the map changes immediately when the switch changes, it seems likely to me that the "stumble" or "fall on it's face" behavior many have complained about in the stock setup could just be the sudden map change as you let the clutch out. If that's so, then minor differences in where the switch engages could vary the behavior depending on the particular bike.

I now have the Flash-Tune interface, but I have not started experimenting yet. The stock ECU image available from FT is the 23P-8591A-30-00 ECU image, while my bike has the slightly newer 23P-8519A-70-00 ECU. I'm trying to find out what the difference is before I overwrite my ECU. The "70" part supersedes the "30" part, and I'm assuming the difference is software.

I see the CJM as a new "opportunity". I could add a switch and have a 3rd map to go along with S and SS.
AC you are one step ahead of me! I was just about to post about that idea. I have a relay and switch set up for the CJM and was thinking I could "fix" the funky timing and have a 3rd map. It would be great for testing because I could load a test map into the clutch/neutral area and then could quickly flip between regular and test maps on the fly without having to stop. Also if my test map started doing something bad I could hit the switch and be back to a safe map in about .5 seconds. That should offer some protection from my stupid mistakes harming the motor. Assuming of course that my new map is not SO bad that it could harm the motor in neutral.
Still waiting for my interface cable to arrive. :( Maybe today. . . .

Well...I assume your bike is a "CA" bike.

The stock ECU image is from MY bike, which is 49-state.

Is there are difference in the ECUs? I'm going to dig through parts fiches to find out.

EDIT: Bike Bandit shows the same PN for CA/Other bike ECUs for the 2012 model year. They do not have the 2013 fiche online.

I do exactly as you describe, but just use T and S mode.

Trust me, I have made a few throttle and decel maps that were unride-able. I always upload my "new" map to S mode and keep my T mode something I know is good.

Yamaha has all the year model parts fiches online at - http://www.yamahamotorsports.com/partviewer/default.aspx?ls=sport

Sure enough...the -70 has superseded the -30 ECU.

If you are that worried, I am sure Chris would be willing to extract the file for you. Give him a call.

Now why would they do that, certainly not for fun, maybe to sort out the hard start

Taliking of which, can any of the cold start programming be seen / altered with the interface

That's a heck of an assumption!

Manufacturer's change ECU programming all the time. I know with my diesel truck, every time the dealer touched it there seemed to be a new program!

The cold start programming isn't immediately available. I'm sure if people ask Chris he will work on it, but I don't think that is a problem that shows up in his market often.

I believe that at least one 2013 S10 owner has reported that the "disable ABS" trick where you put it on the centerstand and run it in 2nd gear no longer works, so that may be one change in the ECU programming.

Exactly. The reason for the up-rev from 30 to 70 could be ANYTHING. I would even assume there were 40, 50, and 60 that never made it to the public or are for a slightly different configuration Tenere (EU?).

It would be pure speculation about the "hard to start". I did some searching around the internet, and talked to a buddy with an R1. Guess what? The Tenere isn't alone with this "issue". It's also been around since the dawn of Yamaha FI.

I wouldn't ASSUME any changes to the ECU Yamaha may/may not have made resolve it.

Got my kit in the mail today. Also downloaded software from the FT website. With a broken foot i should have plenty of time to figure things out. Looking forward to collaboration to make the most of this product.

I got mine also! ::012:: But right now I have the bike torn apart for valve adjustment. That is turning into a real PIA, in part because I had to uninstall some of my mods to get to the valve cover, like cruse control, Givi crash bars, and the LED lights I mounted to the crash bars. Still have not got the valve cover off. :'(
Anyway, I have been playing with the software a little. Very interesting!
Like I was surprised to see that there is only ONE set of fuel maps! ??? By set I mean one TPS and one MAP that are blended together. And the blending map is the same also so in effect only one map. So all modes, all gears, even neutral use the exact same fuel map. The 91 octane pump gas load that comes with the software uses the exact same set of fuel maps with the same values.
But the throttle maps are different and also the timing. In fact there are 19 timing maps in the stock load! ??? But Yamaha only uses 5. (5th and 6th gear use the same)
I wish I understood the blending algorithm used to combine the TPS and MAP tables. The blending table called MAP-TPS bias, has values that range from -6 to 14. The center of the table where I expect MAP to be in control is where the 14 values are and at WFO and idle where I expect to see TPS in control, the values are in the -4 to -6 range. So I can kind of intuitively see what is going on but not exactly what the values mean.
AC, any idea about the algorithm for blending?

Just starting to understand what I'm looking at with the software. A little disappointed that some of the features offered for the R1/r6 are not available like speedometer adjustment, and maybe idle speed adjustment. I am experiencing one bug where if I compare 2 ETV basemaps the colors show just fine, but if I then select compare percent, the whole table goes black and some numbers temporarily show up as I scroll the mouse over them. This is on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. Anyone else have this happen? The compare percent works fine on the other tables I tried, like TPS vs RPM.

Speedo adjustment was left out so as to not mess with the tcs. The r1 and r6 got speedo correction because they can actually change gearing wroth sprockets. The ecu needs the proper actual speed input to make proper tcs decisions.

Report all bugs to Chris. The software is always a work in progress.

Since this kit seems to be less $$$ than a ECUnleashed flash, especially if I would share the cost with a friend: Does it come with a ready to go configured file, silimlar to the ECUnleashed one? I am comfortable to do an ecu flash with my computer, I have no knowledge of ecu programming though.
