Anyone care to guess the verdict?
Considering today's journalism, they probably didn't make one. Wouldn't want to offend any manufacturer.

Oh I dunno about that - the Brit rags, Fastbikes and Bike, seem to have no problem sucking up to BMW, err pleasing their biggest advertisers , err I mean, picking the 1200GS as the best bike by far for every purpose under the sun. THAT is gutsy journalism!

No, I don't think so......... ;)

But I have owned a few BMW's - never any major items that went wrong, but still have no desire to own one again.

Enjoy your weekend as well!!!

KTM last, that is unususal for a dirt bike mag. KLR 2nd, really, that kind of says it all.

It took me awhile to find the magazine, but find it I did, and thought the review was fair.

Consider the source: The writers/editors are dirt bikers. So, their yardstick is what is some pretty technical off-road riding, including single track and boulders. They thought the ST would be great for long-distance travel with some off-road...which is in keeping with the other press I've read and the interests and desires of many of us here; LD tours with the ability to take the road less traveled, dirt and access roads. Kind of sums up my needs. I'm not looking for a dirt tracker..but something to eat up long distance and allow me take on the occasional gravel and dirt road.

Let's put this into perspective; The bike weighs 570 pounds, with skid plate, bars, bags and camping equipment, we're probably looking at 630 - 650 pounds for most of us.

We really going to single track with that much weight?

I have a bunch of on/off road riders on Beemer ADV and one who like me has a Supa10 on order...
They hit single track with these sleds...no worries.

So if their criteria for the test/review was biased so that "their yardstick is what is some pretty technical off-road riding, including single track and boulders..." then how the hell did the KTM finish last? ???

BTW, your assessment of the S-10 and how you're going to use it closely matches mine, and why I ordered one.

Thanks!

Everyone has their own perspective of "best" bike;

BTW...with mag in hand; the bottom line:

Value - KLR first, BMW last
Best if you plan on lots of dirt: KTM first, ST last
Best if you love the road and not much dirt: ST First, KLR last

I considered the source, dirt bikers who choose bikes best suited for dirt. They felt the ST was not well suited because of the weight and the inability to turn off ABS....I haven't ridden all four bikes and can't say they are correct; biased or completely off-base. I also have not ridden on dirt for 25 years and that was accidental (a mountain road I was following ran out of pavement...on a Harley no less), so my perspective is undoubtedly very different...which won't stop me from taking the ST off-road, but will make me carefully choose how difficult those paths will be. (as a friend who also purchased an ST said when I suggested going to do some off-road weekend riding): "You mean let's take our new bikes out and break them?".

I thought the review was fair and reflected the opinions of guys who did not come from our perspective (long-distance, some off-road) but from their own (lots of off-road, some long-distance).

"The opinions expressed in this posting reflect the opinions of a citizen and do not reflect the views of this station or network...."
