This is sort of S10 related in the fact that any funds I receive will go toward the Super Ten but my question is would it be better to remove my farkles from my current bike and sell them separate or leave on the bike for the next owner? It's going to be parts like a windshield, pipes, PCIII, JSD, gel seat, backrest and luggage rack and 2" riser blocks. I'm thinking of the time to remove these items plus shipping costs would have to recouped from whoever buys the parts. I also think as a buyer it's nice to buy a bike already loaded up but most don't want to pay for the add ons. Any comments are appreciated.

The extra parts may make your bike a more attractive buy over another bike, but it does not usually get a buyer to pay an equivalent higher price. To me, it just helps ensure that you actually do get a buyer that will pay at least a fair price, so I would leave the farkles on the old bike.

Most people negotiate by Model/Year/Mileage.. and go from there. It takes a buyer very familiar with the prices of the extras to understand the true value of the bike and even those will say - 'The Blue Book is' or the compare to a more-bare bones bike.

I have always taken stuff off and sold them as that helps fund the stuff going on the new bike.

Yes, you will definitely get more money by selling the farkles separately. I am currently doing that with both my KLR and FJR. There is a big market for used farkles at the right price on the forums.

What I could do also is put out a feeler post on the 109 forum and see if there is any interest in the parts before I remove them.

Great Topic. I'm smack in the middle of this.

I took the farkles off my bmw to lower the price of the bike. I haven't sold them yet, but thought I would offer the prospective buyer the option of purchasing the extra's he wanted.

Well so far it seems to be back firing. Now they want the cheap price and the aftermarket as well.

I think I'm giving the buyer too much to think about. I may just keep my mouth shut and sell the farkles separately. thoughts?

It will backfire! They will want everything and the low price. Sell the good stuff separate.

Definitely sell off the add-ons that are easy to remove. Everybody wants a custom bike, but not YOUR custom bike. Not to mention that most add-ons don't increase the price of the bike, and in some cases may decrease it (depends on the buyer).

This is my experience anyway.

That's what I would do (IMHO). ;)

When I sold m KLR, I removed what few farkles I had to make the price more attractive. I had a few extras (filters, tires) on the shelf that I used for bargaining rather than dropping my price. The most expensive farkle removed was an aftermarket seat and as it turned out, I sold it as well to the buyer of my KLR (for my asking price). Usually, I think you will do better selling farkles separately unless you are very lucky to find a buyer who wants the bike set up exactly as yours AND appreciates what it cost to get it that way.

I have always removed the expensive farkles and sold later. There are some things that are not worth taking off, and may help with the sale.

I am in the middle of doing this with my DL 650. I really wanted to avoid doing it. I'm kind of frustrated with the whole thing. I will sell off the pieces, ship it all out, sell the bike stripped bone stock so that someone feels like they got a great deal.

I guess there is some value in personalizing a bike with your own idea of what it should be like. :)

I posted a feeler message over the weekend and the response was awesome, lots of interest in the mods and one guy even wants the whole bike but I need to find out if he is going to give me my price. Thanks for all the comments and tips.

I left on the custom rear rack, soft saddle bags, tank panniers, tank bag, road pegs, Corbin seat w/ back rest, but took off the Honda Trail 90 extra 3 liter gas can I fitted to my Transalp in hopes I could tuck it in between the frame & right hard bag on the S10. No deal. So, now I've got to come up with a new idea for the Tenere, as I refuse to travel without extra fuel on board. GP

take off the items...have them sitting waiting for the buyers and "dangle the items" with a contagious price
in front of the new buyer. He'll jump and you'll save the hassle of ad's and mailing them out.
I've done this many MANY times...works the charm.! and you get cash money.
Be sure to advertise the items "Taken off for sale" when you ad the OEM stock bike too
