This guy is a respected race motor builder and what he recommends goes against the corporate grain. I used his technique on my Versys and it runs great and uses virtually no oil. I will use this method again when the S-Ten comes. But in all honesty, I have a history of going against the company line in almost every case. These engines are not JD tractor motors, but well engineered close tolerance machines. Molly-coddling them makes no sense. Read his article and he'll explain why.

Besides, I'll bet there's not one of you that will be able to resist and go ahead and break the RULES anyway.

I've done it both ways, and honestly say there is no difference between the two. I have had the opportunity to break in two of the same bike. Still both run about the same, use the same amount of oil between oil changes, and have about the same power. I am going with the MFG recommendation, despite that seldom being the way I operate.
