I'm considering buying a used Super Tenere, and I've searched here for:
  • "pre-purchase"
  • "buying used"
  • "common problems"
Not much in the way of results, so is there a sticky somewhere on how to thoroughly inspect a used Super Tenere before buying?

Appreciate any help!

When in doubt, whatever you do, DON’T testride, you cant resist once you did!
Just kidding, when you have some experience you will be able to feel if anything is wrong.
Common problems? Not that I know of, never experienced any..

Nothing more reliable than a Yamaha…

I’ve owned five S10s and haven’t had any problems other than the occasional headlight bulb replacement. There have been a few minor recalls like the headlight harness for the first generation bike and front brake light switch on the second generation …. 2014 and up. What year bike are you looking at and how many miles are on it? The bike has a valve clearance check required around 26000 miles.

Keep trying terms in the search box, but basically
Gen1 was 2010 (2011 US) thru 2013 and Gen2 was 2014 to present. The Gen2 basically changed a few things and added cruise control and the electronic suspension option.
The cam chain tensioner was an issue in Gen1 and some had issues with hard starting, plus there were a few recalls.
Both gens had some wheel flanges crack and loose spoke issues till about 2018-2019. This was more the folks who didn't keep watch on spoke tension or had LOTS of gravel miles.

Other than that, this is the BMW Recovery Vehicle.

And welcome aboard. Please add your location to help others have context about where your questions and comments come from.

I have a 13 since new and two friends have since bought a 14 and a 19.

There’s some nice things about the Gen 2 models but if you can find a great deal on a Gen 1 I would not hesitate. I added cruise control and changed the cam chain tensioner when I did the valve check.

There really is not a bad unreliable year.

Look for dents in the rims, a sign of possible abuse, or a lot of fun being had. Look for missing spokes on the rear wheel, a sign of neglect. Look for any oily dust accumulation around the final drive, could be kind of normal, but needing attention. Brake pads could be real close to done. There's a weep hose on the right front of the motor, down low, fluid there is an indicator of a leaking water pump, or pump drive shaft seal. Some have run for years with a drip down there. Run the vin # by your dealership and make sure any recalls have been taken care of. A little early miles wise, but listen for an excessive rattle for the first five seconds or so on start up, being mindful that the motor is pretty noisy to begin with. I've got 90,000 on my '12. Eemsreno has over a 125,000 on his. There are many here at or over a 100k. They're great machines.

I'd try to get a 2014+ for the cruise control, and i'm told the fueling is better.

i've got a 2012 with 91,000 miles on it. thing runs great. whenver i take anything apart to maintain it it still looks brand new. fork bushings are good, all the rear suspension parts are good (maybe need a shock soon), driveshaft is good...

coming from BMW this thing is a real treat.
