Hi Jackfis,

Are you talking about revzilla? I have not personally done business with them, but know of others who have. They have a good rep from what I've heard.

I would be curious to see a in depth review. I am still undecided on what I will buy for my incipient S10.

Perhaps not the correct place to reply...but why OEM? Why not just buy the Yamaha cases?

If you replace "OEM" with "aftermarket" in his sentence it makes complete sense. Let's chalk it up to a misstatement and move on.

The question is was asking, apparently not clearly is, why go to aftermarket, instead of using Yamaha boxes? Is it price? Quality or something else?

It's all personal taste, factored by price and (sometimes perceived) quality. I like my OEM bags on my FJR, but many people say the locks are finicky. Some object that you have to use the key to open them each time. Some have reported the OEM bags for the SuperT have finicky locks/latches as well.

I have had good luck with Givi products over the years and will most likely go with them for my SuperT.

Response to an old thread..............perhaps clarifying, perhaps not. Most likely irrelevant in any case.

The difference between OEM and factory, lies in the labeling. In other words, an OEM case (or anything OEM) indicates that the aftermarket or accessory item is manufactured by the "Original Equipment Manufacturer", but sold under a different name(aftermarket brand). Same item reboxed, just not bearing the factory 50% surcharge.

As to the actual subject, hard cases. My personal preference is Caribou cases. Roger at Caribou utilizes Pelican brand (airtight, watertight and have pressure release valves for airline travel) cases which I defy you to break, have a warranty from Roger as well as Pelican, can be replaced by standard Pelican cases which are available all over the internet, and are inexpensive. Roger has developed the mounting mechanism, which works flawlessly, and is reflected in the price of his kit. Included are Hepco & Becker mounts which are very unobtrusive when the cases are removed.

He also has a nice 34L top case that fits a full face helmet.

They aren't as pretty as some cases, but then the ST isn't a beauty contest winner either (and shouldn't be anyway)

The Super Tenere Caribou setup is finished and ready for purchase as we speak.

Disclaimer: I have no stake in any of this other than my advice based upon experience.

Paul. I looked at the Pelican set up and am impressed. I already have a 1510 carry on case for work. I will be removing my rear seat and lowering my aft luggage rack so that I can attach my 1510 lengthwise as a top case when I go to work. If I ever feel the need for larger side cases, I will definitely consider the Caribou setup. I know that several here have already been working with Roger to help determine the desired options for the kit. If you look through the hard luggage thread in modifications, you'll see that a few, and I mean very few, have succeeded in breaking Pelican bags under extreme conditions, but these same conditions would have likely done far worse to any other side case. I think that you'll be very happy with them, and no, I don't think that they are ugly at all.

What you're saying here may be technically true, but in practice OEM with respect to accessories generally means anything sold by the original vehicle manufacturer, regardless of who makes it. It may very well be a mis-use of the term, but that's how people use it.

Mark, I have no idea why you argue, if you know I'm right.

Back to hard luggage....

ptfjjj, I don't actually believe they're ugly, it's just that I personally am not a brushed stainless/aluminum guy. To each their own. I will take function and durability over style every time. However, I believe the black Pelicans will look great on my Raven S-Ten (fastest color, by the way :D). Roger recently came out with some soft inserts for the cases that close off the sides when you open the cases so items won't fall out. He also sells fitted inner bags for those that want them. The cases come off so easily it doesn't seem to make much sense to use soft inners when you can simply take the cases into your room with you.

The S-Ten is actually a little too high tech for my liking, just like my '08 Wrangler. It took me over a year to get used to power windows in a utility Jeep, but I did. It'll probably work that way for the bike, but it will likely take a while.

I ran a pair of Roger's Caribou (Pelican) bags on my last V-Strom (DL-650) and was very impressed with them. I did my own mounting setup using SW-Motech racks.

I was very tempted to go the Pelican case (Caribou) route. I guess those things are awesomely sturdy. Not sure why I finally went with the Micatech. I think both would/will serve well. It can't hurt to have a pelican on the back of your bike. R

Rod, do you recall the over-all width of your set up?

Roger at Caribou lists the overall width of a pair of mounted Pelican 1550's on an XT1200Z at 39 inches on his website.
