Mystery Cover can it take another oil filter?
Maybe jaeger22 can chime in on this as he has rebuilt his motor twice..
I looked over the oil pump and engine casing schematics and one thing both sides have in common is they both have access to oil but I notice the oil pump is directly under the filter port..
I just don't get it why does it exists and can it be utilized? ::017:: ::020::

Not sure what the question is, but are you asking if you can and should install another oil filter port?
If so, why would you feel the need, I'm sure as lowly as Yamaha are, their R&D dept who spend $1000's onn research saw fit to only install one oil filter assuming it would suffice..............
I have yet to find a road going vehicle that require two. But if I'm assuming incorrectly, then I apologise.

I don't know why I would want another filter just honestly would like to know if it can as it seems toserve no purpose other than maybe installing two shorter filters to make a tighter Skid plate?
As I look at the casing it seems to have a through port from one side to the other (red arrow)..

Yamaha designed the engine to be used on left hand drive and right hand drive bikes. For the latter, the oil filter fits on the alternative casting. Or, more seriously, maybe they had an alternative application in mind for this engine (which never materialised) that required a different oil filter location.

Perhaps with their minds on the "more serious" desert "competition" application would be able to fit a port for a remote oil cooler/radiator...;D

Very likely.

Many of the engines we purchase for use here at work have optional "filter" locations. One of the options is an adapter to install an oil cooler. Another is who knows what else Yamaha has in mind for this engine. ATV? Snow machine?... Sometimes it's just nice to have options.

OR, it was the easiest way to provide for cast passages and then seal off the place where the casting core tooling pulled out.

Truthfully I never even noticed. :-[ Actually I never split the cases. I did pull the oil pan and oil pump the first time to check for damage but did not remove that front cover. The second time it was all top end. (Both times due to my error not a fault of the bike :-[ :-[ )
I do find this very interesting! I had no idea that the cover would reveal a second filter mount! Good eye Ramseybella! ::012::

P.S. 700 miles on the latest rebuild and it is running like new! (A lot of it is! LOL) And no noticeable oil consumption or strange sounds. :) I think I am finally out of the woods. I hope so, I am planning to ride it to Tulsa and Albuquerque in a few weeks if the weather holds. ::001::

Thanks jaeger22.
This was mentioned a few times I think it was started about how to mount an off set oil filter to tighten things up with a skid plate and the wart oil filter issue and to get the filter out of harms way!!
It is puzzling the Hell out of me since I had the bike seems like a lot of tooling and parts for nothing.
