My $2 windscreen fix

Like most, i tried the stock screen in both positions.

I bought a MRA vario Touring screen. It was much better, but still got my XD4 visor going pretty good at high speed.

Interestingly, my pillion did not experience any of the same buffeting that was driving me crazy.

I didn't want to add the weight and complexity of an adjustable mount, plus I have an SW motech GPS mount that would interfere and I like it very much.

So, I bought some rubber washers and longer bolts at the hardware store. The washers are about 1/8" thick. I added 2 washers to the upper mounting bolts between the screen and the stay and used the longer bolts. the longer bolts were not black, so i hit them with a sharpie.

I'm absolutely amazed at the difference. The change in the angle is pretty substantial and the effects are excellent.

It worked so well, I'm half tempted to get out my stock screen and try it with the washers behind it.

Look behind your screen where it touches the stays. It only touches the rubber inserts.

I have been riding with the forward spaced windshield since September and like it. I mentioned it a couple times with no response from this forum and a negative from a sort of local. Currently my windshield is in the upper position. Recently ordered (not received) another windshield that is 4.5 inches taller and a 3 inches (i think) wider. This will allow me to lower the new windshield and gain coverage from the wider sides. Hope it works.

I came from a KLR and DL1000. I installed a Madstad on the DL1000 and found the best for me position to be all the way down and all the way forward. I find moving a windshield forward a little bit makes more difference than raising a windshield. I don't get the buffeting that many discuss. I know what they experiencing since I have a KLR that could contribute to violent buffeting until I made many changes. End result I installed a TCS windshield and liked it very much, then I hit a bird and cracked it.

I just walked back in from the garage looking for parts to do this very thing and saw your post. What timing! One question. Did you use one washer per upper bolt or two? I'm glad it worked for you and hope I get the same results.

Just got it done and will take it for a ride later this evening. Thanks for the walkthrough.

My FREE windscreen fix!

OK, it did take some time, it looks like crap, and I'm not sure yet whether it works... but it was FREE... so that must count for something right! ::025::

Thanks for posting! I'm running my stock screen at the highest position and I will definitely be doing this mod! I'll be reporting back soon! Thanks again!

I have some 1/4" or thicker rubber mounts. Tried them with the OEM screen. No worky. Mounted my modified Madstad F650GS screen, perfect. May have a Wasp screen adjuster for sale. It works so good, that I am going to remove the side wind protectors and see how it does without them mounted.

I am interested in how the removal of the wind deflectors works. The reason I installed the deflectors is to help keep the wind from wrapping around the windshield and on to the riders body. If we can remove the deflectors we can improve gas mileage and how the Tenere is effected by cross winds.
