This install is not nearly done yet, but I did manage to mount the CB to the bars. I didn't see a mounting plate on the J&M website that looked like it would fit nicely. So....I got a sheet of aluminum I keep stashed in the garage for just such an ocassion. I cut a much larger square than would be needed and kept carving off until the right size. You will have to notch out one corner to allow for the cables.

I was fortunate to have a mounting plate left over from a previous ride. This allowed me to accurately drill the holes for mounting to the bottom of the CB. To drill the hole for the mirror post, I used a 3/8 inch bit. It was not quite large enough, but going up one size in drill bits would have been way too large a hole. So I got out my rat tail file and ground it a bit larger. Worked like a charm. Aluminum is so easy to work with!

You will have to install the mounting plate on the mirror post without the CB attached. The CB doesn't allow the mirror to spin into place. Once installed, I noticed that I didn't have enough clearnace for the mic switch to move the full range without bumping into the high beam switch. So added the copper spacers. Now the mic switch has full range of motion and is easily activated by my thumb.

Now on to the hard part - wiring it all up. I've got a big pile of wires/noise filters/relays that have to be crammed on this bike somehow. I'll be glad when the farkling is done and I can ride!

Mellow used the J&M mount bracket for Yamaha Cruisers. But I noticed that J&M seems to think their brackets are made of gold as the price went up to nearly $60! Yikes! Also, their bracket moves the mirror back behind the radio control and I don't think that would work for me and the Cal Sci windshield I have as I think the mirror would then hit the windshield at full right turn. I might be able to adjust the angle of the mirror mount to compensate for this.

I am planning on getting the J&M CB as well (I have one on my ST1300). Some friends of mine had made brackets for their KLR650s and I was hoping to use their designs to make my own for the Tenere. With your experience and their KLR designs, I think I will be able to easily make my own.

One question I have is the ease of pressing the PTT lever with the unit mounted forward of the mirror vs the J&M bracket which mounts the unit right where the mirror is currently mounted (and moves the mirror back). Any thoughts on this?

Just sitting in the garage, the mic switch appears to be ealisy accessible and functional. Don't think it will be any issue at all.

Funny you mention KLR. My brother has a KLR and accuses me of "KLR-ing" whenever I fab a bracket like this. Call it what you want, it works and didn't cost me a penny.

What I was really kidding you about was the milkcrate for the tailbag. ::025::

KLR's rule (until I can afford a Tenere').

I made a bracket similar to J&M's cruiser bracket. The mirror does hit the Calsci screen at full right lock. But I will be installing ROX risers so that should take acre of that issue. I found the installation on the Tenere to be much easier than on the ST1300 the unit came off of.

That's funny - as one of my KLR riding friends uses a milk crate for his tail top box. ::025::

Hey, I could rock a milk crate painted silver, yellow or black. :))...though I think it would be kinda fiddly in the rain. :-\
