With one of my goals next year being to start riding dirt, I have decided to get the Mitas E07. The question is do I really need the dakar version or am I good with the regular tires? I am 250lbs and do a lot of twisty riding. Also where have you purchased you tires from?

I got my Dakar E07's through revzilla.

I guess my question is why would you not? Save a couple of bucks? How much will it cost you if you rip a sidewall? Confidence is worth the little extra for me.

Get the Dakar version. It's for big pigs like the Super Ten, GS, 1190/1290, etc. Put the non-Dakar version on KLRs, KTM 690s, etc. I got mine from Amazon. Cheaper than Revzilla.

Asked the same question when I was looking at the Mitas e07. Love my Mitas Dakar e07 tires. Don't ride much off-road but the Dakar gives me confidence when I do. After I found the correct tire pressures (for me) the Mitas Dakar is surprisingly an excellent road tire. Have had little opportunity to ride wet surfaces and I am a weenie when it comes to them so I won't waste your time with my opinion, slow down and enjoy being upright :-[ When this pair of Mitas Dakar e07's become thin I will replace them with another pair.

What was the tire pressure that worked for you?

I usually spread the front and rear tire pressures by 5 psi. 32/33F and 37/38R. Have experimented with 35/36R (no luggage weight) and did not feel any difference. Experiemented with what I thought was 30F and 35R and it was under-steering. Added rear preload and was almost not rideable in the twisty's. Twisty'd my way home and the next morning tire pressure check proved I had 25F ??? Too low Too much! Yesterday took the Tenere to the River (rough winding road) and 32F 37R worked well.

I just put on a set of Dakar's (recommended form here) . With the rocks we have here and our neighboring states, I am glad I bought the slightly tougher Dakars. I just went for a 450 mile loop the other day with 45 miles being dirt. The dirt wasn't bad but the sand wash crossings were a bitch. I hate sand. I am very pleased on how the E07's gripped both the pavement and the dirt. Big difference from the stock BW's and seems about the same as the K60's I had on my other S-10. I ran mine at 36F and 40R. I'm 245ish and 6'....maybe a little short for my weight.
