Global maple syrup reserve theft poses threat to pancake breakfasts
August 31, 2012, 6:17 PM
Forget efforts to tap the strategic petroleum reserve; the global strategic reserve of maple syrup is missing a large quantity of the sticky mainstay of Saturday morning pancake breakfasts.

The reserve is in Quebec, otherwise known as the Saudi Arabia of maple syrup since the Canadian province produces 70% of the world’s supply.

According to a statement by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, the theft was discovered after a routine inventory check found barrels that had apparently been drained of their precious contents.

The total amount stolen hasn’t been disclosed, though the warehouse had been holding more than 10 million pounds of maple syrup, worth more than $30 million.

Maple syrup prices can vary widely according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In New England the 2011 gallon equivalent price was $36.96, according to the USDA. At that price a 42-gallon barrel of maple syrup would be worth more than 15 times as much as a barrel of light sweet crude oil.
