Has anyone tried using a ABS plastic camera travel case as a top mount pannier? It seems this could be a good way to have a custom size or internal configuration for camera gear or other items. It could be held in place with u-bolts and be sturdy enough to put a soft bag on top. Looks might a primary issue.
What are your thoughts?

Are you talking about a Pelican Case? Nothing make shift about that, lots of them on bikes, both as side cases and top boxes.

That was my thought. Seems like a logical alternative to expensive panniers. Any recommendations on boxes and mounting?

Pelican 1510, commonly used in the photography world since it is airline carry-on approved.

For the top case many have used one of the aluminum luggage racks like AltRider or Touratech. Going through the plastic factory one might be ok except for any rugged use/abuse.
