So the offer was rejected but the dealer will revisit it tomorrow. Sales guy said I could get the standard shift Africa Twin for less. I'm talking Tenere 2015 vs Twin 2016. I'm planning to do long road trips with some mild dirt in between. Not the other way around. I figure the resale on the Twin will be better than the 10. Probably about $500 difference between the standard Twin and the Tenere es. Wad'ya think?

I'm standing firm on my offer which I think is more than enough for the bike. I know resale on this bike isn't great but I really think it is the bike for me. We'll see what happens tomorrow. The pricing in Canada is a bit wacky. Full retail for the Twin is $16,200 after taxes for the DCT and about $500 less for the standard shift if I'm not mistaken. Full retail on the es is$17,200 ish I'm below $16,000 taxes in for a leftover '15. I can make payments while the snow flies. yay

I just realized you're a Canookian, so no idea about your pricing.

Tenere = tubeless and shaft drive
TA = tubes and a chain

Based on the riding you plan, the decision would be simple for me. YMMV

Just an FYI - it helps others to offer more applicable advice or responses when they know where you are located. US vs Canada sometimes makes a big difference in perspective. You might want to change Sherwood Park to Alberta, Canada, so that other forum members can more easily understand your location and perspective.

You mention resale value, so it would seem that is important to you. No issue with that, just might help others give more applicable responses if we knew how long you plan on owning the bike, if you have a regular pattern for your bike ownership.

Right now in the US, the left over 2013 Super Tens can be had for around 9k out the door. That sure doesn't help re-sale value for Gen I Super Ten owners. But the 14/15 bikes are still up there in price. I don't know what Yamaha plans to do with their next Gen of the Super Ten, but now that CC and ES are on the Gen II, it may only be BNG, (Bold New Graphics), for a while.

Suit yourself, but I can't imagine a few hundred dollars swaying me to buy an AT over a S10 or vice versa. The bikes are so dramatically different, I would think this would overwhelm any small pricing differences. IOW, if you want a heavy, more-comfortable, bigger and much more road-oriented shaft-drive bike with cruise and tubeless, the S10 would be worth paying more. OTOH, if you want a much more basic bike with vastly superior dirt credentials, what with the 21" front end, lighter-weight, and chain, then the AT would be worth paying more for.

I'd also be sure to think about accessories. The Honda ones are very pricey and will be in short supply for awhile. The aftermarket will come on strong, but again, I think it will be awhile and the prices will be very firm. And the rumor is that Honda is only importing a few hundred AT's to Canada in 2016 so unless you're on a dealer list, it might not even be possible to get one this year.

Another thing...When I go on trips I tend to have my significant other on the pillion....I'm not that sure there would be as much room on the AT as on the S10... :-\

The dealership accepted my offer on the Tenere this morning. The bike is 3.5 hrs south of me so I won't see it for a while. As much as I would have loved to ride an AT, I do t think it is the bike for me. A red Es with Yamaha luggage will do the trick.

Congratulations on the purchase!

I know you bought a 2015 but since you've been shopping I figured you might know, what colors are offered on the 2016 ST ES? The Yamaha website doesn't seem helpful in this regard.

Widely reported as follows:
"The Super Ténéré returns for 2016 in two new colors: Raven and special-edition 60th Anniversary Yellow/Black. The Raven model will retail for $15,090, and the 60th Anniversary model will retail for $15,590. Both colors will be available in dealerships beginning in November."

I believe the ES is only offered in black for 2016. The yellow is available in the standard version. Colors may differ in Canada however.

Also, thanks for the congrats messages. I budgeted for the standard version plus crash guards and skid plate. Since I bought the ES, I'll have to save longer before I made that purchase. The local bike show is Jan 8, so I may do a little shopping while there.

Well you made the right decision for your intended use. If your planning on doing longer road trips with just a little dirt here and there you will never regret buying a bike with shaft drive and tubeless tires. Congrats and enjoy the ride.
