A few buddies of mine are headed to Sturgis this Summer for the rally. This really isn't my type of event (however those Harley guys can be fun to party with). Anyway they asked me to go and I initially declined. However they assured me that they were going to spend most of the time riding the Black Hills and surrounding areas and less at the Rally. I always wanted to ride that area and the deal got sweetened when they cleared a space on an enclosed trailer for my bike and will be splitting a cabin. I'd never be able to do that trip on my own for that little money and that short of time since we are trailering the bikes so I decided to go. I'll post a trip report...should be an interesting experiment. Bet I'll have the only S10 at the Rally ::025::

The Black hills are great so are the badlands. The buffalo freak me out in Custer park when they are on the side of the road. Such large beast with little brains, i always think they are giving me the stink eye. There is actually an S10 rider from Sturgis if he still has his bike. I think he leaves town during the rally. Great area to ride don't forget about the Presidents heads.

Yeah we have rough route already planned. We are staying in Keystone which isn't far from Mt Rushmore. Devils Tower is also on the list....just keep hearing that tune from Close Encounters.... ::025::

One area to avoid is Spearfish Canyon. Way to crowded and lots of drunk people on motorcycles who ride the canyons way to fast. Most times there is a line of almost stop and go traffic up that canyon and to Deadwood. Pretty country though. Devils Tower is a good ride away from all of that though... You must be staying down by Rapid City if you are near the heads...

I've heard that the Buffalo Chip Campground is pretty "wild", too. Never been that way, yet, but hopefully someone can chime in on that scene as well.

I went two years ago. Camped at the chip. The chip was great fun and a good crowd. No problems. Ride all day then party at the concert until late in the morning. Campground is very well organized and quiet in the sleeping areas.

Sturgis in general. Great riding. Lots of fun, everyone should consider going at least once. It's an experience I will always remember.

We rented a cabin at someplace in Keystone which is about a 50 minutes from Sturgis. The owner said he has a good group every year doesn't get to rowdy. Just praying the weather is good O:)

The weather is another thing... they get some pretty good thunderstorms up there sometimes. I think it was two years ago that they had several days of nothing but rain and thunderstorms... really messed the week up.

Weather: it was cold at night for camping, but I managed. Biggest weather issue was Hail. Caught two Hail storms. Locals told us it was unusual.

Keystone will be fun because it's in the middle of two great rides > Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway. I go almost every year. Usually stay at Custer State Park at Sylvan Lake Lodge, but doing the Chip next year. The weather can go from god aweful hot 110 degrees to below freezing at night. I've always had a great time. I'll be riding my Black Super Ten. ::026::

We went several years ago and plan to go over for a day again this year. My sis-in-law lives in Gillette and we just ride over for the day whenever we go.

If you see a pair of Burgman scooters with some old people riding them - that would be us! WAVE!!! ::012::

Mine may have been the first Tenere at Sturgis in 2011, as I picked up the bike July 31st and had just over 450 miles on it before riding to Sturgis. Photo is on the main drag on Aug 7th around 9:45am.
