Hi, my name is Rexford and I am addicted to motorcycles.....oh wait, wrong meeting. I am seriously looking at replacing some bikes in my garage with the Tenere. So I will be browsing from now until purchase. A little about me (aren't you excited??) I started riding in 1979 on a '72 ironhead sporty and rode HD's from 79-98 until I got on my first BMW and man did my outlook on life change! I have always kept HD's in the garage and have one at the present...but my favorite motorcycle to travel on, to cut up roads with and to just flat out enjoy was my 2004 R1150 GSA. Anyway, after many miles on it I upgraded to a 1200GSA wow what a let down. After leaking final drives and a friend's final drive failure I left the BMW's alone. I picked up my first Yamaha last year... a 2008 FJR1300 and my god was I impressed!!!! Great build quality and fantastic ride-ability. But I am old and reflect back and always try to compare the bikes that I am riding to that 1150GSA. During a reading of ADVrider I read in several posts that the Super 10 is that bike. So I am off to test ride and possibly even trade the Harley (still owe on it) and the FJR to have a tricked out fully loaded Tenere. Dad gum, I now need a break. Hope some of you stayed with me through all of this. Please let me know if I am heading in the right direction and will finally find something to replace my GSA memories with.

Good day and be safe all......

Rexford

::004:: Rexford,

If you are looking for reliability and the fun you had on your 1150 and heading in the direction of the Yamaha XT1200Z, then I think you would be a happy man again on a motorcycle, going to the places you want to go without worry of a failure. Like many have said...this bike just keeps getting better ::022::

Welcome on, Rexford from North Texas. You will be very impressed with and fond of this bike. Seriously. Go ride one. Be sure to take your check book with you. Getter done, son. You'll really have a lot to talk about then. Good luck and ::004:: . R. ::022::

Swapped from 1200GS myself.

I tested the latest GS and GS on the same day as a Tenere and reckon there is not much in it.

I actually preferred the stock GS handling to the Tenere (Quicker steering and sportier feel) but prefered the Tenere to the GSA for handling, and it is better balanced and feels lighter at low speeds than the stock GS to me. I also like the GS front end with its virtually non existent fork dive. In awful weather the Tenere wins with much better stability and although I am not so keen on the fork dive, I think it rides bump a bit better. Overall a bit of a draw.

Engine wise I like the latest GS motors, less bottom end grunt but a better top end with a few more rpm's to play with, the Yamaha has more bottom end grunt and a more linear delivery, the head prefers the Yam motor and the heart the GS one.

Comfort seems pretty much on-par as well, I reckon the Yamaha seat is better (at least for me) and leg room etc. about the same, with the narrower waisline of the Tenere making it easier to reach the floor and dab your foot when waddling about. The only slight dissapointment is a bit less pillion room, especially with a top box fitted, the GS was not great, but was certainly a bit better.

As I had luggage on my GS and aload of other stuff including £1200 of Wilburs shocks I would have actually prefered a new GS, the bikes were so close in the real world and we both knew the GS, it gave the comfort and perfromance I needed and I could have swapped all my extra's over making it a cheaper option, and it was in my mind a slightly better bike out of the crate except....

The reliability (or lack of) and the gamble of getting a lemon, I know people who have clocked up many miles on BMW's with no issues, but have come across far more who have tales of Final Drives falling apart (sometimes mulitpl failures) and all the EWS and FPC electrical Gremlins and mine always needed extra work doing on every service or after every trip, combined with the 50% premium on labour rates for BMW's over Yamaha's the running costs on the GS were insane, it would be cheaper per mile to run a Ferrari.

Now loving the Yamaha as I trust the bike, I am happier spending on improvements as I see it as a long term ownership and not something I have to trade in every 2 years before the warranty runs out like with the BMW.

The build quality does look very good and it seems to be a generally well thought out product, go buy one ::008::

::004:: I have ridden both the GS and the Tenere before buying the Yamaha. I believe that if you buy the Yamaha, you will always believe you made the right decision. I have friends who have the GS and are constantly working on them. Just make the leap and do it... ::021::

rexford, sounds like you have the bug!!!! We will see you soon with pics of your new STeed!!! Like others have mentioned here coming from FJR's and Honda ST's, to me this thing is better than them in so many ways!!! It has been the most fun and exciting bike I have owned and ridden now over 125k miles (all former bikes combined) !!!

Welcome Rexford,
I was once a 2 time Harley/Buell owner and a current motorcycle officer assigned a HD FLHTP. I got the adventure bite a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back with the Tenere. I looked at the GS and realized I would only be in the same boat, with keeping my Harley. A motorcycle that loves to be at the dealership every 5k. The Tenere is a great all around bike. Test drive one and you'll be like everyone else on the forum. Obsessed with this great motorcycle
