Long days 2-up full load

Hello all,

I live in BC Canada. My wife and I enjoy the two-up camping scenario ... sometimes riding 1000km (600miles) per day in the Western US states. No too much dirt but some.

We have had many great trips on my '01 R1150 GS over the past 10+ years but it is now time to look for a newer mount.

I considered the Triumph Explorer did not like heat issue and am now looking at a 2013 S10.

How well can the S10 handle a full payload (rider plus passenger, gear and luggage = 450 lbs ++ a little perhaps) through long and often hot days (90F+) ?

Comments would be most welcome.

I am around 308 pounds I load about say close to 80 pounds of gear.
I have to adjust my rear all the way as well as the front close to all the way.
New after market suspension would be a good solution but i can't afford it.

I'd say the ST would handle it fine...maybe crank up the rear shock a few clicks and should be good to go..Enjoy the ride ::021::

Our 2 up full load is 600lbs.+.Bike handles this no problem.Stock shock preload to full hard.Its not perfect but it works.Wife did not like stock seat at all.Russell day long ,now everybody happy.Our longest one day journey was 560 miles ,no problem.Jim

Tenere will easily do it but needs help with a much firmer rear spring. Wife and I made several trips (sans camping gear) this year and it's a comfy long distance mount.

My wife and I have done many thousands of miles 2-up, touring and back-country camping. The bike does not complain. Of course I've made a few upgrades over time.
Put a Corbin passenger seat with backrest for her comfort.
At nearly 1000 lbs. GVW fully loaded, the rear shock is taxed. Replaced at 25K miles with a Penske 8987 and fork revalve and springs from Stoltec Moto.
For the shock I use the 750 spring for solo and swap in a 950 when loaded. Got the shock spring replacement drill down to about 45 minutes. I have several baselines for damping settings depending on the riding envelope.

For the way we ride, I can't imagine a better mount than the Super Ténéré.

Probably We r around 380lbs fully loaded and the rear spring works but I cannot seeing it doing much more, the front seems fine.
the wife is very comfy as am I but 400 mile days have been our longest.
The motor is perfect and it handles amazingly well on fire roads even with the rear sagging a bit, Put on a diff rear spring and good to go.

My wife and I just returned from a 3800km ride over 10 days, partly freeway and partly mountain roads. The longest stretch was 800km in one day. We were 2 up and fully loaded with top case (with backrest for the wife), side cases and tank bag. Fine weather most of the way, but we hit a severe downpour on the last day in Tuscany (no problem because we had waterproofs). As many on this thread said, with such a load the back spring needs to be tightened up. I put it one notch below maximum hard. My 2013 ST performed without any problems. I look forward to doing it again.

My wife and I recently did a 90 day 30,000 km ride around North America on my S10. The ride took us up to Alaska, across Canada and down into the southern states with very little major freeways and quite a lot of dirt ridden during that time We were fully loaded with panniers, top case, tank bag and camping gear. We were well over the recommended weight but with a few clicks of the suspension we had no issues at all with the bike. The S10 handled everything including some server weather, high mountain passes and lots of mud. I could not recommend a better ride for two up and hope you choose one for yourself

You can't do more than Ray and Karen's riding ALL of the Americas severely overloaded. Which proved it's a non-event to the bike. The one thing Ray did do was replace the rear spokes when he mangled the rear rim.

+1000 here. They really had that S10 packed to the max and it just kept going. Pretty much says it all.

I do LD riding and rallies. (1k+ days) I'm 300 lbs in gear and carry about 150 additional lbs in tools, gear, extra fuel and water. I did what escapefjrtist suggests and replaced the stock spring with a heavier one, as suggested by a suspension shop for my load. This works well for me, but is not ideal since you can't compensate well for extreme changes from solo riding unloaded to two up, loaded, (or rally load in my case), but is still a fair compromise and a good bang for the buck. ($150 including labor for the swap) An adjustable shock is a better alternative, if that fits in your budget.

You may or may not want better seats. Just depends on you and your wife's comfort levels on the stocker. Typicall larger rider/pillion will want a custom or improved seat. Lighter folks seem more ok with the stock seat.

As far as the bike handling the long and hot days, zero problem there. It doesn't overheat and due to the side mounted radiator, does not dump heat on the rider. If you are stuck in traffic on a blazing hot day, or get a constant side wind from the left, you may notice some heat on that leg from the radiator output, but most of the time it is not perceived unless you're wearing jeans or shorts.

Unfortunately my local Yamaha dealer ( with an orphan Brand New (BN) 2013 on the floor ) did not wish to cooperate with my offer.

Next day, I purchased and BN 2013 Explorer loaded with many toys. We are 90% 2-up on pavement riders so the TEX looked good.

My much better half and I have been doing the 2-up camping thing for 20 + years mostly on the Beemer and looking forward to many more with the TEX.

The Beemer '01 R 1150GS may soon be retired.
