Leaking Radiator

I'm just about to travel the TransLab from Baie Comeau to Blanc Sablon and Newfoundland. 1200km of unpaved road through the wilderness. I noticed the faint smell of anti freeze all day and now that I've had time to pull the cover the rad is leaking along a seam on the inside (air intake side)

Any body else had a rad leak. The overflow tank is full hot , will check it cold later. Its hard to tell how much is leaking, and the rate.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the coolant is coming from a seam?

Is it at all possible that it could be that the cap somehow came unseated and the coolant is coming somehow from the radiator cap sealing rubber gasket, and then simply working its way down to the lowest spot?

Been here from the beginning. Read every report or question. I'm pretty sure you are the first person in THOUSANDS of posts to have a leaker.

Warranty?

Oh, and this time when the dealer says they haven't ever seen your problem before, they aren't fibbing. :)

Keep us posted please.

Just double checked, the cap is tight. Leak is about 1 inch in from the front on the inside and about half way down. Coolant tank shows full cold. Rode 250 miles today with the leak, problem is it will probably get worse

What about the little vent hose near the cap? Any sign it may have split or otherwise leaked the coolant you found?

The radiator cap has a spring to seat the rubber gasket. Any chance it was bumped (like if you tipped over) while it was hot and spewed a the little bit of coolant you found?

Have you opened the radiator cold and checked the coolant level in the radiator itself?

Seems if you had a split seam or cracked end tank on the radiator, or a puncture of some kind there would be a greater loss of coolant, and the coolant level in your reservoir would have dropped.

You've got me scratching my head, looking at my bike for clues, and perusing the service manual and parts catalog! ;)

Are you still under warranty and no beyond acceptable "offs"? If so, let Mr. Yamaha figure it out.

Or, if you have any doubt of the source and aren't exactly sure you could always put a UV coolant dye and a cheap walmart UV light and look. But all this would do is give you a little bit of peace of mind of where the problem lies (which you obviously have), but it would let you know where to start.

I'd have to look, but it doesn't seem to be impossible for something harder than a butterfly to maybe have buzzed through there and nicked a tube, perfect storm sorta thing. Did a 110k on the old Royal Star, never holed it, but I've read of simple things doing in a tube or two. Warranty on road debris? Hmmm. Look forward to hearing the verdict.

I foresee Jaxon getting some orders for his mesh fillers...

Bummer on the leak. The lower opening bothered me from the beginning.

This does not help you but... last year I purchased a screen from Jaxon to cover the lower air entry. Over the miles I have seen more than one dent and lost the screen once. It is worth the purchase if it does nothing more than give me a secure feeling.

Hello I have changed the coolant and the radiator cap didn't seal properly, it became to flow coolant from radiator to reservoir deposit. I thought I was filled the system in excess and took off the "extra" coolant from the reservoir. It was not extra it was from the system. I was so close to overheat the engine because coolant didn't flow in the system. Temperature climbed to 107 Celsius degrees, the fan turned on but no hot air was being pulled out from the radiator. I turned off the engine. After a recheck there was a 300 ml quantity missing. After refilling the system it worked normally. When the engine is off and hot I can fairly hear how air flows through radiator cap. In conclusion I think it has to be a mandatory procedure to CHANGE the radiator cap every time the coolant is changed, 27 usd amount isn't worth an engine overheat.

Thank you from Mexico

I apologize for my English.
