Hey there TT, I have a question regarding a Kaoko Throttle Lock.

I guess 3 weeks ago or so I ordered a new set of tires and a throttle lock for my 2010 KLR. Then I went and plunked down my money on a new Super Tenere in the meantime. The deal just came up, and I 'had' to jump at it.

So what I'd like to know is: will the Kaoko throttle lock I bought from you under the "By what fits my bike" for the KLR fit on my new super ten without issue? If not, what can I do about getting it to fit?

Thanks in advance

Looks like sending it back for the right one is your best option.

Hey there KingChicken....

Thanks for ordering from us - we do appreciate your business. My opinion is that you will not be able to fit the Kaoko on the new S10. To be aertain send an email to our Twisted Customer Service and take an inside diameter measurement and include a photo of the bar-end when you do this. These guys are called "Gear Experts" and trust me they are. If it's possible they will be able to figure it out. Key phrase is "If it's possible" - If it isn't they can discuss alternatives with you.

You never can tell what the Kaoko may fit.

I "borrowed" the one off my Blackbird and it was a straight fit to my wife's SH300i scooter.

Came in handy on a 1600km day.

Cheers! will do. Just picked it up from FEDEX today, so I'll get on that shortly.
So.... What was the verdict? If it fits I will add it to the available parts for the S10 on our WS.

I ordered the Kaoko lock on February 9th. It was on B/O and I received it a couple of days ago (circa 3/10) and installed it:

Ordered: 1 KAO.YAM630 Kaoko Throttle Lock Cruise Control (Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere, '10-)
Qty In Stock: 0 Qty On Backorder: 1
Expected Ship Date: 29-Feb-2012
Suggested in-stock alternative:

After some fiddling around and jacking with adjustments, I came to the conclusion that even if it is a proper fit for this bike, it ain't for me. I never got it to work right. Instructions were a bit on the cryptic side. Didn't really explain adjustments, especially the little bitty Allen hex set screw.

I've used several throttle locks, had a Throttlemeister on the FJR which worked great, Audiovox CC100 on the VEE and a VistaCruise deluxe on a couple of bikes way back to 1970s, but this Kaoko is a bit of a mystery to me, so I will be contacting TT about returning this Kaoko. My personal opinion is that it is way expensive for what the company is selling. Throttlemeister is not cheap either, but worked great right out of the box.

Nothing against TT, just don't care for this item.

Interesting. Mine went on in minutes and works great. I had to use a couple of the washers they provided to get proper adjustment, but works fine after that.

Its a shame to give up on it. I ordered my Kaoko before I got the bike. Its been on there for 15000km and works perfectly, needing no washers nor any adjustment on my Oxford hearted grips with stock Yamaha hand guards.

Rolling the knurled part with your little finger in the same direction as throttling on is how it is engaged. Adjusting by rolling on more or less adjusts the threshold in the throttle action where the Kaoko grabs and how hard it holds. The little Allen hex set screw can be used to tighten the knurled section in relation to the stationary part of the Kaoko so that it rolls more or less easily with the little finger.

Rolling off the throttle in the normal fashion releases the Koaoko.

Rolling the knurled part off a few turns prevents it being engaged when not required - like in stop start traffic.

Thanks for the input. I'll keep fiddlin' a bit to make it work. I have grip puppies on, maybe interfering with throttle return. We'll see. The big washer that is supposed to fit inside the throttle tube (I think), doesn't. Looks to rest on the edge of the tube  Oh well, I gots all weekend to mess with it and ride the bike - will be real nice weather this weekend here in Colorado.

Bob, if I recall correctly, they included 3 small washers with mine and I used either 2 or 3 of them inside the tube to get the proper spacing for my throttle tube.

The Allen key adjusts the tension on the knob. Or, how easy it is to turn it.

I love mine. I had to use all the supplied washers and then go get one more from my spare bits and pieces bin to get it shimmed correctly. Once I had this done it worked perfectly and I have not had to mess with it at all in the 7,000 miles it's been on.

Thank you for your suggestions. I went out to the Cave and messed around a bit. I turned the big washer around and that appeared to make a difference. Will also play with the 'spacers' that I haven't inserted yet. I need to take the bike out for an actual ride with gloves on ::26:: but I think this thing will work just fine. Thanks again.

How did the throttle lock perform once you got it straightened out?

Took a ride this weekend and the lock works ok. Just a bit of fiddling, but once I get used to it I think it will work just fine. Thanks for your interest, Kev.

Glad to hear it is working out for you. It does take a little getting used to. The nice thing is that you can't get it stuck in the on position. I bought a bike last year that came with another brand of throttle lock. I figured I should try it out and see how other throttle locks performed. The first time I used the throttle lock it jammed in the on position. I'll tell you my heart went into overdrive. As soon as I got home it came off.

I just got mine and the big washer doesn't fit inside the tube either, what is everyone doing?

Are you still having an issue with the Kaoko for you S10? The large washer is designed to fit around the end of the handlebar and makes contact with the throttle tube. That is how it "locks" the throttle into position.

Right. I think what hojo is asking is the correct orientation of this large, stepped washer. It appeared by the photo in the directions (which weren't very clear) that the end of the washer/insert that is lesser diameter is intended to face the throttle tube and the wider side of the washer should face outboard, again by looking at the not very clear instructions.

Mine did not work that way, as the narrower end would not fit into the throttle tube, so I reversed the washer so that the wider side was facing the tube's outside edge and the lock worked ok with that orientation.

So I guess, why is there a stepped washer instead of just a big, fat washer? What exactly does it accomplish by having two different diameter sides? Considering the fat price for this small piece of hardware, Kaoko could have put a bit more thought and detail into the installation instructions ::)
