Hi all. :)

Just put a deposit down to order my first ever new bike after 30+ years of second hand stuff.
It's an S10 in grey with the world crosser kit. Can't wait. :D

Any tips for running in or just follow the book?

Mighty fine, Didg, and welcome on. Great color. I have the same one. Lots of different theories on breaking in. I pretty much just ride it normal. I don't rev the snot out of it, but otherwise I just go. But what do I know? ::004:: to the Forum. R. ::022::

Thanks all for the warm welcome. :)

Rasher: Thanks for the link, that makes a lot of sense. Who would you recommend to get the ECU flashed? (I've only just started trawling through all the great info on this site).
Also I'm planning on fitting an aftermarket muffler, should I wait to do that before getting it flashed?

Rasher can correct me if I'm wrong, but it is because the flash completes the S10, as it SHOULD have come running that way.
You can wait, of course. It's still a great bike, even strangled. (Yamaha restricts the bike substantially in the first 3 gears. They don't let you have the whole motor. The flash lifts the restrictions and completely transforms how the bike performs)

Look for threads with "ECU Unleashed" or "Gen 2" in them. Thoroughly documented. And now almost universally accepted as a great improvement.

By the way, flashing the ECU is an ongoing subject. There are now a couple of more flavors of ECU programming.

Transforms the feel of the bike, talk to Simon at Race Engineering as he has flashed several S10's, it makes a huge improvement to low down in the first 3 gears and massively improves mid-range throttle response in all gears, I am convinced it is also smoother - and it definitely uses 6-7% less fuel.

Rear shock is also well worth the money for two-up, but solo OE is OK - but try it with two extra lines of pre-load wound on for tarmac use - you should find the handling feels much sharper like that, that is about perfect for someone in the 70-90kg range, if you much heavier you may want to add a shade more, two up you will find even max'd out it is soft and wallowy.

I also had forks re-worked by MCT in stowmarket, this gives a far more plush feel, with less sudden dive and better bump handling, but this is not essential, but if you have the cash and plan to keep the bike for years to come head south and get Flash and suspension done at the same time as Race Engineering and MCT are fairly close together.

I do plan on it being a keeper so I'll make plans to do that. Will they both do what they need to do while I wait?

I'm also going to ask the dealer to put mineral oil in before I pick it up, give it a 20 mile blast then get them to change the oil and filter inc engine flush (mineral again), then ride the 50 miles home.
I will do as the guy in the link says and keep it on mineral oil for the first 1500 miles. I have run in aero engines like this, so what he suggests makes good sense to me.
I will need to use 4th gear to follow what he says if 1st - 3rd are restricted.

Sure will, you may notice the restriction on slow corners, exiting roundabouts, but it is not enough to spoil the bike unless your on Alpine style switchbacks.

I will need to use 4th gear to follow what he says if 1st - 3rd are restricted.
I don't think they are that restrictive, each gear gets progressively better, so 1st is quite limited, but I guess you won't spend a lot of time there, certainly by third the mid-range is reasonable so if you can keep it in the midrange in 3rd and upwards I would have thought it would be fine.

I think Yamaha use mineral oil for new bikes anyway so you could just run it around the block and then get the dealer to change it, and I know there is mineral Yamalube available as I spotted it in a Yamaha dealer a couple of weeks ago.

If you want the suspension done note that MCT can get busy, and spring time can get an influx of race bikes so worth booking in early, they can sometimes be booked up for a couple of months solid, also if you want a Wilburs shock they are built to order so can take a few weeks - but will arrive sprung and damped to your exact spec.

Thanks for a warm welcome. :)

A quick update re running in. I decided to skip the oil change at 20 miles but changed the oil and filter at 100 miles and while the oil had not thinned at all, it was filthy black and full of metal dust.
I replaced the oil with Millers running in oil and the engine sounded noticeably nicer after the oil change.
I will get the dealer to replace the oil at the 600 mile first service with more Millers running in oil, then switch to semi synthetic after that.

So far I have added a carbon fender extender, carbon hugger and black Altrider crash bars.

Enjoying the bike LOTS. ;D
