I was going to remove the grab rails to see how I'd like that but the rear grab rail bolt seems to run out of thread before it locks down and there doesn't seem to be enough room on the front grab rail section as the luggage tie down there looks to be in the way. Curious how you even got it to work. I'm assuming the only think you're supposed to do is remove the grabrail and put both supplied spacers and bolts in those areas and then just remove the spacer that attaches to the pass foot rest on the left and one of the two spacers in that area on the right side?
Yes, I did need to buy new bolts. I believe they were 70mm long, and were fully threaded. When I tightened the front mounts they did end up touching the tie down loops on the under pillion seat portion. But they only seemed to barely touch as they were getting tight, so I did not worry about them touching.
The spacers on the foot pegs I remember messing with, but I dont remember exactly what I did. I know I swapped the bolts, the one for the right side was really long, like almost touching the sub franme, so I used it on the left side. I used spacers as needed to get the bags straight vertically.

Well.....I made the decision.

Silver Odyssey II's are on their way.

I liked how the Odysseys' we close to level with the top of the seat and not so deep as the Safaris.

Al is not done with a new spacer kit to mount the bags in really tight without the grab rails. He said a couple of weeks.

Plus I got free shipping. ::025::

Again, Al has told me he is redoing the mounting kit and creating an instruction set. Also, as I mentioned in another thread, because of the splay, the actual width depends on where you mount the bags, front to rear. But I think the numbers I have given are pretty much a minimum.
I would agree with that - I have about 35.5 rear and 36.25 at the front. With a bit of work there's potential to shave another 1/2" or so off, but it's diminishing returns at this point. Also, if you want to take out the slight splay, you would have to add spacers to the rear, so you'd be increasing the width again.

Interested to see what Jesse's new improved spacer setup is like.

i took off the handles, and used 1 3/8" of spacers with 70mm bolts. i cut the bottom out of the luggage tiedowns, cut the muffler guard a little, cut the bolt on the right. mounted the left bottom behind the footrest bracket (which is shimmed out 1 washer) and ended up with racks that are 15 1/4" from rubber mount bumper to rubber mount bumper. they are strait, square, and plumb. i can go with 9.5" wide boxes and my total width will be 34 1/4"... but my boxes will be 22" x 22".... no need for top box. my racks are so tight the boxes almost touch the rear blinkers.

Sallydog, not sure what setup you're talking about - Jesse Odysseys? Cos if I can get another inch or more doing what you've done - I'm there! Can you post some pics?

thanks

so with 15 1/4 i will do 2 9" boxes (22" x 22") and be total about 33 1/4 wide.... with 22x 22 x 9 boxes i wont need to carry the UGLY top box. and have plenty of room to strap shit on top once the rear seat is removed.

oh yeah. i needed m10 x 70 x 125 pitch bolts and could only get them in a bulk pack. very hard to find the 125 pitch. $5 each at yamaha. if anyone is interested i will sell 4 for $12 shipped conus.

I like how you cut the luggage rack just enough to let the Jesse mount in, rather than a wholesale removal of the tie down, which is what my hamfisted approach would have been. It is hard to see what you did with the muffler heat shield, but it looks like you took a hacksaw to it just up at the point of contact. Can you describe that just a little more. Are you seeing any problems due to cutting into the heat shield? Jesse mounts or bags getting hot?

Overall, great job. Me likey. May give it a go. Thanks for posting!

i just cut the shield enough to mount the racks. when the boxes get mounted i will trim u the shield just enough so everything works and sand the edges nice. the heat will not be a problem to the racks

Excellent, and good pics - may have a go at this tomorrow. At the rear, is the rack touching the plastic tail light housing?

I already have shorter bolts, not sure what length, but if I need some others maybe I'll be able to take your extras...
