My tourer before the ES was a VFR1200 it had a manual remote Adjuster for the rear preload which was cool but I was forever riding around with it either too hard or too soft because I was always riding with varying combinations of load and passenger and I could never remember what I last had set the preload to so would have to wind it out to full hard or soft and then back to what I wanted to set it to, but mostly forgot or couldn't be bothered as it was to much effort.

The Electronic suspension on the ES was a big selling point for me and I really like it. Being able to change the suspension in seconds without even getting off the bike is fantastic, its also great for fine tuning once you are already on the road.

The heated grips are also nice, this is my first bike with heated grips as I have never really seen the point, but must say I'm hooked now.

Probably the best thing about the ES is riding around with the suspension soft, and then before you hit some twisting roads firm it up for better handling while you fang it. the other thing is you are adjusting both the front and rear and not just the preload but the damping as well.

I only ride solo, I only ride road, so suspension for me is set and forget. Having said that, I am about to upgrade my rear suspension now it has done 25k miles, and will change fork valves, springs and oil shortly too.

If I were in the market for a new bike I would buy the ES, not particularly for the suspension, but for the other parts you get and the ease of selling when I came to change it.

Yes the ES is a no-brainer. I have a 2015 XT1200ZE and thought the ES would be a gimmick and hated the fact that you can't adjust the front and rear independantly on it.
But after 2 months i am a convert - the yamaha settings just work. And i have found that adjustments do make big differences and is great for changing on the move going from motorway to crappy b road etc and heated grips are a godsend.

Having just bought a 15 ES I would say definitely worth it to me. Does the non-ES have cruise control? That has also been a surprisingly beneficial feature; I'm vibration sensitive in my right hand and just being able to move that hand around a little has been a huge difference. Plus it helps control any urges to fund the local police force.

Yes, The non-ES does have cruise control. The ES upgrades include heated grips and electric suspension.

Can you change the rear spring on a ES model? I'm 270lbs, which is above average, so I don't know if the ES would accommodate me and sometimes a passenger.

I opted non-ES because ESA is not really worth it for my riding style. I can take the time to adjust the suspension when needed and use the extra grand to add some farkles.

The other important thing is that ESA is another thing that can break and if it does, I'm not sufficiently skilled at mechanical work to fix it so that spells out dealership.

I got a great deal on a ES and wanted the heated grips, so the bike is being picked up on
Tuesday and hopefully I can get it that night or wed morning.
