you can by pass the rear brake part on the pump so you have a good rear brake without abs, here you are page 2.

Amazing, thanks Rob!

On my to pick up some copper brake hose now and get the rear bypassed. Will go easy for the first few miles to get used to it but that sounds like it's the perfect solution for me. Bought the bike for £5k with 18,000 miles on it so was expecting to find a few issues along the way but not one that would cost me a few thousand.

Amazing how quick everyone is on this forum with fixes, it's invaluable! Makes me not want to ever sell the bike as there's surely going to be someone who has experience with every issue possible!

Now to find that pesky 10mm ring spanner I put down nearby just a moment ago...

Update to previous post. Just passed 90,000 miles. No ABS issues here (2015 ES). I’ve bled the brakes again but didn’t cycle the pump last time. Drain holes are clear as I do check these occasionally. I’m getting ready to change all the brake pads before my trip to AZ next month and will bleed a flush the system again then.

scott,

can i ask you say you cycled the abs regular but not bleed the brakes that much did you then just pull the bike up on the stand and run the cycle procedure without brake fluid change can you do that, or to cycle the abs pump you have to do a fluid change

rob
Sorry, Rob, I think I didn't make myself clear. What I meant by cycling the ABS was activating it while riding. I would deliberately use the front and rear brakes in low traction areas when riding off road, so the ABS pump always got a workout, but I never cycled it the one or two times I actually bled the brakes.

To actually answer your question though, I would ASSUME that in order to MOVE any brake fluid OUT of the ABS pump, you would have to open a bleed valve on one of the calipers as well as have the cap off the master cylinder reservoir to add more fluid, as the pump was cycling, or else the brake fluid would have nowhere to go while you were cycling the pump.

thanks that makes sence now i didn,t know if it was doable without bleeding

Just finished the bypass pipes, pics for reference if anyone fancies doing it.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction Rob

So a week later and 1200 miles on the brakes are doing really nicely. Pulled an emergency stop after an Amazon driver pulled out of at junction on me and the back didn't lock up just stopped the bike very quickly. Testament to the tyres and weight of the bike.

So far the only little niggle is the ABS light comes on if I simultaneously hard brake on both front and back. Resets when the bike is turned off though and no lingering error codes.

I remember having a slight anxiety about the rear ABS after activating it once while filtering through traffic in France and someone opened their door, had to slam my foot down hard and the juddering made me feel like I wasnt going to stop. That fear is now completely gone (I understand it should probably be replaced with a fear of locking up/skidding but so far I haven't experienced that).

Anyone with the rear brake issue- would recommend this fix.

Since you did the rear bypass... you could do the front bypass... leave the valve body "isolated", but without removing it from the place... place connectors…and do a "rinsing" of the rear abs circuit... and then the front abs circuit... .and rinse in both (in and out) ways. You could use an external manual pump (or a large syringe)….if you have some dirt in a valve that is clogging it, maybe you can get it out…Using brake fluid for rinsing…..if the module is already “lost”, maybe by rinsing it, you can revive it...
It's like a coronary bypass, before,..you died of a heart attack and that's it... now they place a coronary stent, so you can stay alive and can continue working for many more years and thus support the family expenses:)

I think I might have been unclear. My brakes started acting up last week. Now I have no rear brakes. 87k miles on the bike.
You should remember "what was the method used to change the pads in those 87k miles”…..and you will probably get the answers to your rear brake problem".

yeah, mine weren’t as I wasn’t aware of the guidance at the time.

Does this *Damage* the pump or is this something that merely needs flushing?
