We have learned that many if not all motorcycle manufacturers keep production numbers close to their respective chests. However, the numbers sold and registered is public knowledge and we can learn some interesting statistics from that. I have an article in a Powersports trade publication that lists registration numbers for leading vehicles by various clategories selected by the publisher for the 12 month period from June 2009 thru May 2010. Of interest to readers of this forum would be the Dual Purpose classification. I'll tell you that number 1 is the KLR 650. Now, there are 3 BMW's listed in the top 10, the GS1200, GSA1200 and F800 GS. It is interesting that this category includes 3 or possibly 4 bikes that are not street legal, but they are still listed as dual purpose and that is puzzling to me, as there is a separate category for dirt bikes. In any case, getting back to the 3 BMW's in the top ten, let's see who can guess the numbers of each model registered.

R1200GS
R1200 GS Adventure
F800GS

As a side note, in the category of on hghway motorcycles, there is one brand that has 6 in the top ten. Can you guess who?

Based solely on the amount of leather fringe and extremely loud but ponderously slow motorcyles that pass by my shop all summer..... I would say Harley

6 in the top 10 = Honda

I don't know about the BMW's but I would guess the numbers are not very big. less than 5,000..

If we are talking dual sports, it has to be KTM. They are about the only one I can think of with that many different dual sports. Yamaha has a bunch of little dual sports; TW200, XT250, WR250R, etc. but not 6. Nor does Honda, BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, etc. So has to be KTM.

No guess on the BMW numbers.

The category with 6 in the top 10 that I mentioned is in the on road category, not dual sports.

Oops. Read the original too fast. Thought you meant "on highway dirtbikes", as in dual sports, when you said "on highway motorcycles".

Ok, here are the numbers.

In the Dual Porpose category, the KLR 650 is in first place with 4649 units registered in that 12 month period.

The BMW R1200GS is in 4th with 1303 units.
The R1200 GSA is in 7th with 1130 units
The BMW F800 GS is in 9th with 1061.

As I mentioned, there are a few bikes listed in this category in this publication, Powersports Business, that don't belong, in my opinion, as they are not street legal and therefore not "dual purpose". These include 5th place Honda CRF150F with 1289, 6th place CRF100F with 1164, and 8th place CRF50F with 1092. The second place model is the KTM 530EXC with 1349 and I don't know if it is street legal or not. To finish out the list, the Kaw KLX250S is 3rd with 1314 and the Suzuki DR650SE is 10th with 1056.

What I found interesting is that the BMW big adventure bikes, sold 2433 of the 1200cc units and 1061 of the 800 cc GS units. How will Yamaha do in that market will be interesting.

In the on road street bike category, it was HD with 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th places. The Honda CBR1000RR was 7th with 6394 and GL1800 was 8th with 6215. Kaw had two winners with the 250 Ninja in 3rd with 8031 and ZX600 in 10th with 5158. There were no Yamahas in the top 10.

Fred,

The KTM 530 EXCR is DOT street legal in all 50 States. I have a 2008. Basically a dirt bike with enough equipment to make it DOT legal.

I'm not surprised the Vstroms didn't make the top10, don't get me wrong - I love mine, but they are past their prime. I think they're bigger in the USED bike market now. It's a great valued bike though.

I'll tell you the number for Yamaha Super Tenere for Turkey. I was at the motoshow in IStanbul in February 2011. Since the introduction of the bike in 2010 (I think summer of 2010) They sold whooping 11 units  . The first introduction unit had a price tag of $28000 later in fall they reduce the price to $25000.

Wow - how does that price compare with the competition - like the BMW?

Actually looks like strong sales for a first year bike. Just hope they can maintain/improve that number next year.
