If you don't mind stating... What are you guys paying for insurance on your Teneres?
**EDIT**What I should have said is... Has anyone found the Tenere to be way more expensive than a comparable sized cruiser or touring bike?**EDIT**

The only "full coverage" insurance I can recall carrying was on my 2009 Sportster. It was a 1200cc/$10,000/recreation use bike and I thought I paid $190 a year with a $1000 deductible.
Since I'm taking out a loan to get the S10, I'm going to have to carry full coverage. I've been with Progressive for about 10 years and always been satisfied. I just logged in and got a quote for almost $700 a year with a $500 deductible and not much better with a $1000 deductible.

Does $700 sound high? I plan on giving them a call before I pick up the bike on Tuesday, but historically I've just done everything online. Liability insurance has never run me over $100 a year (in the last 10 years).

I did search for the topic of insurance but found nothing...

Thanks in advance.

Well... as soon as I submitted, I did a Google search and it took me right back to yamahasupertenere.com :) ...
Looks like $700 is not great, but not out of line. Also looks like I may need to check out Geico.

Kendall, welcome aboard.
You mentioned going to Google and I'll point out that the search function on this board works really well. There are some instructions in the section about the forum.

This has been extensively discussed in a couple of other threads. Rather than be accused of being a PITA by just telling you to search for yourself, here are a couple of the better ones:

To cut right to the chase -- $700 isn't out of line.

The above being said, coming online asking what others are paying for insurance isn't really a valid way to determine whether $700 is reasonable or not. Garaging zip code factors in, but more importantly -- what limits do others carry? Uninsured/underinsured motorist? Collision? Comprehensive? Etc.

Regardless, enjoy your new bike.

Thanks for the links... yeah, I goofed and searched using the search box rather than clicking on the "Search" link. That worked much better.
I also just got a quote from Geico for $280. I'll give Progressive an opportunity to match, but if not... looks like I'm moving to Geico with our 2 scooters.

Thanks again,
Kendall

You're right. That was poorly worded. I guess I was just trying to figure out if anyone noticed this type of bike being more expensive to insure. I was just really shocked with the quote and wanted to see if this was out of the norm before I called them. The $280 I was quoted from Geico was more what I was thinking... I'm old, no accidents, been riding many years... :) . Hopefully Progressive will come thru when I call.

Obviously this has been discussed in detail on other threads... and I feel like a complete noob for starting another one (I have been a functioning member on other MC forums... honest) :)
However, I did want to throw this out there if anyone is using Progressive:
I just got of the phone with them (1st time I've had to call them in 10 years). They stated that the Tenere ES is a "SuperBike" and that's why it's so much more. Even being with them for 10 years without a single claim, them were unable to come close to Geico. After bringing over our two scooters, it brought it down even more. So Progressive = $744 vs Geico = $252. 100K/300K 500 ded. Only difference was Geico comes with Roadside Assistance and Progressive came with $1000 extra in accessory coverage. I hate to leave them, but that's nuts.

When buying any insurance one has to make sure that they are comparing apples-to-apples. This is not that easy. I have Dairy Land insurance. It might not be the cheapest but I can tell you one thing...they are "on the spot" when you have a problem and they do NOT try to short change you when it comes to repairing your bike. I have had to collect three times on three different bikes and not one hassle.

::026:: It's no good just going for cost, you have to weigh up if the level of cover is suitable for your specific needs. For what it's worth I paid £192 fully comprehensive here in the UK (this covers legal, rider clothing, hire bike and European travel).

For my '14 it's $375 a year which I thought was high.

A few things to consider with insurance are your age, driving record, amount of DUI's and accidents within your area, amount of vehicle thefts in your area and of course, cost of replacement and/or parts for your vehicle.

Who is that with, Tim and is your 14 a ES? I ask because my 14 ES is about twice what I was paying for my 12 with Nationwide. It was the cheapest that I could find with a company with good feedback ratings, but I haven't checked with Geico yet.

Thanks.

My 2014 ES is on a policy by itself with full coverage for 12 months for $185 thru American Modern Insurance.
Progressive wanted $473 for the same coverage.

Wow - glad I checked in here - I wanted to compare apples to apples coverage cost so I went to my current policy with Progressive and noticed that my liability limits reverted to the minimum required when I made the last policy change. I quickly bumped them back up to $500k for liability and supplementary uninsured motorist coverages and added the $25K OBEL along with $100 deductible comp and collision.

For the record, I'm 51, live in Western NY, and have no claims for the bikes.

3 bikes on the policy - 1992 Yamaha PW80, 2009 KTM 250 XC-W, and a 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere. Total annual premium including the above changes is $265/year for all 3 bikes.

Not a bad deal if you ask me. Including the PW80 gets me an additional % discount, so I do!

You have to take into account that the last ride of the year was November 11th and it may be March or April before I can ride again.

I had the same issue when I bought my 2012 Tenere. I had been with Progressive for years and they quoted me somewhere in the $700/yr range. Found they were considering this a "superbike" because it was over 1,000cc's. I have State Farm for my home so I gave them a shot. They ran the VIN and for them it comes up as a Dual-Sport. I pay ~$350/yr full coverage with high limits and low deductible.

Every single time I shop insurance, State Farm is consistently the least expensive. I've had them since I was a teenager, and have had coverage with them in California, Nevada and Arizona. I usually keep all of my insurance business with them, which helps with the discounts.

I think I pay like $250 a year for both bikes through Progressive.....2012 S10 and 06 KLR650.....Collision on both....$500 deductible.

But I am a married, old (47) man with a clean driving record.....

Actually I just checked here is my break down

2006 2012
Kawas Yamah

BODILY INJURY & PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY
BI $25,000 EACH PERSON - $50,000 EACH ACCIDENT
PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY - $25,000 EACH ACCIDENT
UNINSURED MOTORIST
$25,000 EACH PERSON - $50,000 EACH ACCIDENT
MEDICAL PAYMENTS $1,000 EACH PERSON
COMPREHENSIVE $500 DEDUCTIBLE
COLLISION $500 DEDUCTIBLE
ACCESSORY COVERAGE $3,000 INCL INCL

Premium by Vehicle $75.00 $169.00
Total Policy Premium $244.00

So just for the S10 it would be $169

I realize the coverage is low....so the premium is low....I may up it in the spring....
