I wonder if it about "classification" too. I paid less for a 1500cc Goldwing than for a 750cc GSXR. Think the Tenere got tagged as a Sport Bike versus a touring/road bike? I'm going to make a call and talk that over with the agent today. Curiosity is up now...

Doesn't Ontario set the prices according to engine cc and nothing else? That's what the guy who bought my NT700V and imported it to Ontario said they do. He switched from ST1300 to NT700V, purely because the insurance on 1300cc was prohibitive.
They set the prices according to how long we have been riding a bike, postal code (zip code), engine cc, age and drivers licence record, some don't insure bikes that will go off road and other don't do sport bikes, young riders with a 1000cc sport bike are not accepted or they cannot afford it or have to pay $5000 or more, I think its a good thing.

Last year they told me my bike was a new bike with no history, big displacement (1200cc), I live in the City and I was a new driver. I didn't have a bike for 12 years and back then I had 5 years to complete the drivers licence which I never did, it expired. I was 45 when I got the Tenere and that was the only thing going for me.

I don't agree with them doing the price according to engine size, I tried my friends GSXR1000, 200cc less then mine, after I rode it I told him that if I have to pay $1400 he should pay 3x $1400, that thing is crazy fast, uncomfortable and hard to turn, he is 35, leaves outside the City and pays about $1100 and another $1100 for his KTM 950 SM, he is the only rider in the house. I think it's too much for a second bike. Like me he also has a house and 2 cars with the same insurance company.

What do you guys pay for a second bike?

I received a ballpark quote from State Farm at about $43 a month (Seattle-area). Will let you know if that stands up and the terms.
Was told it is ALL cc. The agent event played around with the program and entered various sizes. My existing policy with them probably influences it some.

Finally got invoice and details:
State Farm: $554 per year. $50 comprehensive deductable. $250 collision. $300K liability.
All other vehicles insured with SF, as well as home insurance.
Clean record. Good CR.
Seems ballpark.

I am SOOO ready to get my 22 year old son and his DL1000 off my policy. While I love to have him around, he just got a job and is moving out.

Since they insure to the highest risk rider on the most expensive bike, the Progressive bill that I just got shows the premium for the VStrom at a paltry $27, while the Tenere is $690.
::)

The agent on the phone said that my bill without Tim will be cut nearly in half.

Here in Pasadena, I felt lucky to find a deal at $850/year from Allstate. 40+, single, perfect record. Still getting the stick from the insurance co.

Most others were quoting in the neighborhood of $1200+

I will be paying about $690 next year for insurance on my Tenere ($250 Collision/$100 Comprehensive deductables). It will be going down approximately $250 from last year. My wife had a cow with the amount of insurance and called up Progressive. It is categorized as a sport bike. Someone got that wrong. Normally my insurance is lot less. I do have a couple of older tickets that will be rolling off this year.

Insurance is dependant on which state you are in and whether you have other coverages (auto, home and such). Here in Oklahoma, I was paying $571 for Geico (progressive was almost $700 per year). I am switching to Liberty Mutual (everything) and my S10 is $300 per year for 100/300/100. Each state has there own regulations and some rate the S10 as a sport bike. If yours does, argue with them to get it changed.

I have State Farm, had to send them a pic of my VIN plate on the Tenere. I pay $712/ year for the Tenere and a Victory Vision for 25/50/25 coverage with $1000 deductibles, no medical payments, no towing, and I pay for the full year up front. Yeah I know I am under insured, but I hate pissing money away on legalized gambling. Until We were robbed this last October, I haven't filed and insurance claim since a tree fell on my car in 2001.

Before SF I had Progressive, and they wanted twice and much for the Tenere than SF. The second in line was Geico, slightly more expensive than SF. My wife has had SF for years, before we were married in September I bounced back and forth between Geico and Progressive, depending on who has the best deal. After getting married I moved my truck over to SF. I quoted my truck out with SF before being married, it was twice what Progressive wanted, after getting married, it was half what Progressive wanted. I have better insurance on my truck, it can do more damage, I am insured at 100/300/100. no med, no towing, with $1000 deductibles.

Yes I am a cheap bastard, especially when it comes to reoccurring cost.

Geico full over the top coverage came in at $376 year for me.. Have had my Moto endorsement for just shy of 30 years now..
State Farm gave me a quote of $1651 a year!!!! WTF?? lol
Progressive came in at $967 year

Live in Southern California, driving record is clean except for one (an only) at fault accident two years ago..

That little limmey lizard and the company he reps are a great bargain if you ask me.

Wow! you guys pay a LOT for insurance. In Florida, NO insurance is required if you are over 25 and wear a helmet. ???
Not saying it is a good idea to go with out, but I am convinced that is why it is cheap here. With State Farm, it was around $130 every 6 months for full coverage and my DR-650 was $34 every 6 months for liability only. I just switched to Safeco because they are less for a year than State Farm was for 6 months! $102 a YEAR for full coverage on the S10, and $25 a year for the DR-650. ::012::

My insurance is $416/year with Progressive. 100/300 coverage, $500 comp and collision, $3k accessory coverage included. One way to lower your insurance rate is to bump the deductibles up a bit. I figure if something goes wrong and I don't have $500 somewhere, I've got a lot more issues than whatever happened with the bike.

Does anyone see this insurance thing changing? This really is a problem. It's not classified correctly at all. I talked with two companies and both saw this as a sport bike. I explained its a big ugly, not that fast(relative to sport bikes) dual purpose bike typically ridden by the 50+ crowd. This bike is way more expensive to insure than my GS I had. Long term, money saved on BMW maintenance will be spent on Tenere insurance I guess.

Man these rates are all over the map. I know they differ from area to area but wow. I have State farm for everything BUT my Tenere, they were twice as high as GMAC. My tenere is $600 a year with GMAC, and that's twice as much as my 05 GS was. It's worth it though ::008::

My insurance was $371 a year for the S10 and $360 a year for my Multi when I lived in California. Last summer we moved to Germany for my wifes job and now my S10 is $1395 a year and the Multi is $850. :'( I took full coverage off of the Duc. This is with USAA, the same company I had stateside. Both of my cars are cheaper than my bikes here. In Cali it was the opposite. I'm 40+ with a spotless driving record and I've had my motorcycle endorsment for over 24 years. We will be in Germany for another 3+ years and then its back to Cali. Oh well, I least I get to tour Europe. ::26:: In April I'm riding the S10 to Italy. In June I will be in Portugal for the European Multistrada Meeting (Yeah I'm taking the Duc). In July I'm riding the S10 to Garmisch for the annual BMW days and then it's on to the Stelvio Pass. ::012::
