Hi gentleman,
Found out today, The cost of insuring my bike will be around $300.00 a year form Progressive. I'm thrilled. You see it was starting to get mentally bleak for me when deciding to go back into motorcyling for the economics of it. Now, I feel like I'm doing the right thing and, choosing the right bike. Will not be opting out. This bike may be something more than one should choose when going back into motorcycling after 36 years but, it has more safety features built into it and, the way it's built than anything else I researched (at least according to reviews).

(By gollie, life don't get no better this. You have guardian angels and grandchildren to be around. I oughta know. I'm still here .)

My renewal is due soon, and I've gotten letters from both State Farm (previous insurer) and Progressive (current insurer). State Farm is claiming two rate decreases since I left them and Progressive has claimed a decrease as well (I'll know how much once my renewal comes). Good news all around.

Do these insurance companies have a classification for the Super Tenere yet? I read earlier that they were classifying it as a sport bike. I have not checked with AAA, my carrier as I was waiting for a VIN to get the quote.

I got a quote from Progressive for around $545/year for full coverage (with limits slightly above those for basic full coverage).
This was inline with my '09 BMW

I think you can go as low as $130/year for just liabilty.

Yeah, you can get it down really cheap if you want to. I have a friend who is insuring a 2004 Katana for under $100 a year. You really don't get much though in terms of coverage...

Jeff, I don't think that would even get you in the ballpark. From what I have found, the underwriters set the classification and every bike can be different.

I got another quote from Foremost and it was 800. They still have the Tenere classified as a performance bike. They insured my Goldwing for 400 and it cost a lot more. lol.

After seeing the Progressive quote, I may contact them.

Hi Jim,
If you aren't already an AMA member, they have an insurance program and it might be worth a look. In addition, the annual membership includes road service and towing (not that a new Tenere should need this), not only for your bike, but all yourvehicles, including RVs, trailers and so forth. Coverage is also provided for your spouse and children away at school, as well. Some find the towing a comfort when they're on a long ride away from home. (Disclaimer: I'm not a salesperson for the AMA)

was the 545 for another bike or the tenere?
Jeff,

I used the VIN from a european demo bike and got that information. It may not be 100% accurate but, I think the european VIN had enough info that Progressive could determine it wasn't a crotchrocket or scooter. So I'm willing to bet future quotes will be pretty close.

I asked Progressive about the bike when I did my last renewal. Coverage is 250,000/500,000/100,000 plus collision with a $500 deductible, price was quoted at $180 per year. They said without a VIN number it may not be exact, but very close.

I get a lot of discounts like home owner, multi-bike, being 45 yrs old and I'm sure some other stuff. I was pretty happy with that price. It's less than my wife's Wee.

Actually that is a USA VIN from one of the black USA demos in this thread: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=820.0

Good idea to use that for insurance quotes, Kev.

I agree, it is cheap. Just wrote the check for two Stroms, and one ATV. Annual cost $375 for all of it. I have much lower coverage on the ATV and only keep it on the policy because 3 bikes is a bigger discount and makes the entire policy cheaper. I don't know how Progressive comes up with that rate, but I've never complained about the price.

I guess I'll have to call the Progressive folks, as I can't see the difference in three plans they quoted on line, with premiums ranging from $180 to $575. For classification, I selected Super Sport Touring, as they didn't have anything for adventure touring and I didn't think dual sport was quite accurate. I used the demo VIN we have here. There are a lot of details that I want explained. I was going to go shopping anyway, as my present company, Foremost classifies the S10 as a performance bike. Also I called them and asked them if my dealer loaned me a bike to ride would I be covered. They said my insurance only covers my bike and if I rode any other, I would not be covered. I had State Farm for about 40 years and although their rate was considerably higher than Foremost, I ASSUMED that it covered me if I rode someone elses's bike. I will check on that as I shop for a new policy for the S10. I know that SF covered rental cars, but the Foremost people told me that bike insurance is different.

In any case, there are a lot of variable in bike policies and I need many moer details before I insure the S10.

Thanks Fred...wasn't sure if that was really a DOT version or a disguised Euro version.
Yes, someone posted about the black ones in the demo fleet being USA bikes and Japako confirmed it when talking to the demo guys and he also saw the EPA sticker on the Raven that he rode. http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=811.0
