Indexing forks?

I know this may seem like a newby question but do forks have to be indexed or rotated to a certain position before they are tightened in the clamps? I couldn't see any type of index marks on the forks and I couldn't find anything about it in the manual but I am still not sure.

I dropped my S-10 a while ago and had to loosen all of the fork clamps to get the front wheel straight with the handlebars again. When I did, I rotated the forks in their clamps and noticed they were not in the same position as before. The forks are in the same position as far as how much of the fork is sticking out of the upper clamps but they are rotated to different spots because the writing on the fork caps is not in the same position. The writing was in the same position before I loosened the fork clamps and moved them. I am pretty sure this doesn't matter but I wanted to ask around here first. I do quite a bit of highway and I want the best handling I can get.

Thanks for the help.

Sander- Thanks for the confirmation. I went ahead and indexed my forks by aligning the writing on the fork caps and then putting marks on the forks where they clamp to the upper triple tree clamp. I re-aligned the forks again and got them even more straight than it was before.

Now my OCD is satisfied.... for a while. ;)
