Still working on breaking in the new machine, but the weather is looking awesome this week in Virginia so I should have it done tomorrow. Jumping from my DL1000 Vee to this bike has been a great experience, but for one thing. The ignition key can not be removed after unlocking the fuel cap. WTF, am I suppose to want to scratch the gas tank with the key set. I guess I will have to just have the ignition key on a ring by itself, stupid design if you ask me.

Congrats on the new S10.

One mans treasure is another mans.... I like that I won't misplace my key when I refuel. Depending on your keychain, it should not scratch anything.

I agree with you 52, I asked awhile back if anyone had done a mod where the key could be removed, but got no replies? - I'm still hoping someone will find a cure - for the interrim I put some of that clear protect-all anti errosion tape where my keys hit......

Never have any more keys etc on the same key ring as your bike key. They get blown around in the wind and moved around with the movement of the bike and scratch the ignition lock surround and the top yoke. ::)

I don't like that FJR mod. I guess I will just have to suck it up, but it sure is thoughtless of the engineers. On the Vee I just unlocked the gas door and then put the key back in the ignition.

Well I read thru the FJR Mod and figured I got some time to kill so I went for it, pics below but it was easy enough
1) Open the fuel cap
2) Plug the fill port with a rag, it would be easy to drop something in there and make a 30 minute job MUCH longer.........
3) Remove the fuel cap assy from bike, note the bolts lengths - they must be returned to their respective holes
4) With the cap assy on your work bench remove the 2 philps screws from the bottom of the cap, slowly remove this latch, on the latch side you will see the "T" Dodad that holds the key - remove that peice and there is a small spring under the Dodad, remove that also.
5) Reassemble without the Dodad or small spring, you might have to turn the key to line up casting cutout grooves while tightening the two removed philips head screw, so don't tighten these until the key is operating normally.
6) Reassemble the gas cap assy onto the tank.
Conclusion - this is close to what I wanted, the cap operates like a deadbolt at your house, you can open the cap turn the key back to the close position and remove your keys from the cap, BUT to close the cap you have to reinstall you key into the gas cap, turn to open position before closing. Seems sort of a pain, but no keys hitting the tank paint.
Since it's a fully reversible mod I'm gonna try it for awhile and see if I like it ::)
Thanks Guys for where to find this info....

I have a Bags Connection tank bag, and when I stopped for gas, I would invariably throw the bag up on the bars and forget to take out the key. I saw this idea and had done the same on my Goldwing. Just cut a key down and put a small knob on it.
Now when I stop for gas the key is in the tank. If I'm leaving the bike I just put the bag in the side bags and pull the key.

Works for me..

Nice pics N2! And I was going to offer up what Japako did, but he beat me to it. Nice job!

These are the easy options, but there are probably more too. Like installing a 'race' cap that has no key. For some, this is the bomb, for others, they lose the cap! You decide what works best for you. My wife has a race cap, but ordered a spare cap and keeps it taped to the lid of her top box in case she lose the cap on a rally.

Just go to Ebay and type in "keyless Yamaha gas caps" and tons will come up.
