You should...

... Removed the padding and put it in the kitchen sink with warm water and a dab of soap. Let it soak for 30 minutes. Drained the water and rinsed the padding. Hung the padding out to dry in 100 degree sun. Came inside and saw a dirt ring around the sink. Cleaned the sink. Note to self... clean the helmet padding more often. That's your head you put in that sweat box.

... Also hung my jacket on the patio and rinsed it with a hose. Used a box fan to help dry it.

... All this after riding in beautiful 102*- 106* summer weather. But is a dry heat ;(

I've got a little bag for delicate clothes (like lingerie and such) that I put the pieces-parts in and wash on delicate. seems to do the trick.

Yeah, helmets can get pretty nasty. I don't know how people buy used helmets... ::005::

My Wife and Daughter are taking the MSF class in July. They supply helmets, but I am hot going to let anyone in my family use one of those skanky things. They may not be ATGATT at the class since its all low speed parking lot stuff, but they'll for sure have their own helmet for the class and ATGATT before they hit the road.

One of several reasons I would never buy a used helmet. Same for used shoes, mattresses, sleeping bags, jock straps, etc. No thanks. I can handle my own funk, but everybody else's funk is toxic!

I've always used one of these http://2uptouring.com/Motorcycle-Helmet-Liner-Order.aspx when riding. I shave my head (well part of it, mother nature does the other part) so using this keeps my liner WAY cleaner. Not to mention it oddly keeps your head a little cooler, I've even dumped ice water on it and put it on. Like having a little AC unit in your helmet :D
Like you need AC in San Diego...lucky bastard. I'd love to have that weather year round! However the cost of living and taxes, you can keep those :D
Funny, the one and only time I was out there, it rained and was colder (60's) 2 of the 3 days I was there and it was this time of year.

I too have used those but I think a lot of the oily dirt comes from the neck, cheeks and skin that sill comes in contact with the helmet lining. I see how quickly the collar of my jacket gets dirty. And yes I do bath every day.

Yup, May Gray and June Gloom, we get light rain and get socked in with the coastal clouds. Can actually get a little chilly during those months :D At least chilly for us San Diegans.
