Ideas on what to do with this space?

I was looking for some storage space on the bike to keep things that will always be on the bike. I was wondering what people are doing with this space.

I'm pretty sure a member fabbed up a top base plate, with a storage slot below for a small box. It was pretty slick, but it's been awhile, and I can't remember who, or what thread.

Is this the post you are thinking of? If so, I have considered this. I just didn't know if somebody was doing something with the space as it currently is under the bottom plate of the AltRider rack.

That very well could be the one I remember. Fits perfect, and looks like a clean install.

I took the factory spacer out the day I brought both of my S10s home. With the passenger seat off as well. Nice flat load platform all the way back that way. Nice space for a duffle.

People have put small pelican style cases there, bags secured with a strap, tire repair kits and other stuff too.

I would stuff a spare 19" tube in there. I did like Eric and made mine flat. Also removed the grab bars. Here is the video on how to do it:

I'm also very careful when exceeding the weight rating on the back. I'm blown away at the weight guys put on the back of these bikes. Consequently you always read about a rack cracking or subframe breaking. The weight rating is 11 lbs on front rack and 11 lbs on rear rack. I'm right about the limit with my everyday configuration. So far subframe is holding up. It's part of my pre trip check.

You are much better off with your passenger seat left in place for packing on the weight.

Wish I would have seen this before I bought my Altrider rack.

I bit the bullet and purchased the Touratech pannier racks. Reason being they reinforce the subframe yet will allow the mounts to break so as not to do frame damage.

I looked at all the aftermarket rack offerings and realized they were not as strong as stock.

I have the Altrider tail rack. Nestled between the bottom of the rack and the brake lights is a Klein tool bag in which I keep a Slime air compressor and tire plug kit. It's a tight fit so it's never wiggled loose but I clip it in with a carabiner anyway.

Love that Happy Trails rack. I have done the same but made it from an Altrider rack and the plate from my Ardcases top box. I have made use of all the space there. Will slung a photo up.

I went with the HT plate, making it a flat platform for my dry bag when the seat is off. Which is always off. So much easier for trips, my street clothes and shaving gear are in the bag, pop it off at the motel, no messing in the cases.

Mabe it was mine....
Custom made lower mount with Givi M3 Monokey plate attached. Space enuff for a Pelican 1150 but Im now using a Caseling moulded 8x9x4 case which holds slightly more stuff. Pins thru top plate hold case in place. Helmet lock mounts on side.0_tapatalk_share_2007289943_compressed.jpg0_tapatalk_share_1503463078_compressed.jpg0_tapatalk_share_2015971155_compressed.jpg
Ive posted this setup before...on a different thread. Its been on 3 different Tens now & is holding up fine....no problems...even when my Givi E56 case is mounted....& full of stuff.

I don't think that's the one I remember, but it might even be better. Yours is good useable size.

Only changes Ive made....
I liked the Pelican....but the moulded foam Caseling works even better. I can now fit my emerg battery inside too.
Ive thought about switching top plates....but the M3 fits perfectly...& is smooth underneath so case slides easily.... & it mounts with 2 8mm bolts....
The helmet lock mounts to the same slot in plate & I could add another one on the other side if needed.
The steel lower mount is almost as light as a thicker alum Alt Rider lower ...without the problems brought on by those long bolts & spacers. Mine has short spacers/bolts jus to clear the plastic rear fender only.
