Ever since I feel in love with the Yamaha TDM850 in '92, I have not wanted any other bike but the TDM. I even had the brochure on the TDM up to '98. So my wife of 13 years comes up to me one morning, after me telling her about a TDM on Ebay and tells me to get one or to shut up. Ye ha! Green light!!
So I started looking for a one, and I come across an article about the Super Ten. So after a discussion with the wife, the green light for the Super Ten was given. So everything is great. I am given up my dream of a TDM for a new Super Ten. So a month after pre-ordering the Super Ten, I was on my way to the dealer to order the accessories for touring and then this happens. The wife thinks that it is something out there that does not want me to have a motorcycle. I am not picky, but I want a certain type. And Yamaha has always been the top of the list. Well at least the two bikes now.
Like I told my dealer, I have waited since '92 for a bike. And I am not going to let this one get away. So I will wait. So when it come in in November, I will bring it home and put it in my garage and pay homage to it till spring.
So, what I'm thinking about doing is to buy another bike to get use to riding and wait for the greatest bike ever to arrive.
So I am looking at a Kawasaki KLR '09. What do you guys think of this bike? It looks like it has a pretty good following and a solid reputation. But I have never looked at anything else but the TDM and Super Ten.
Any information and help is greatly appreciated.

I just sold my KLR. It was an '09 as well. Blue. keeping in mind that I've never ridden the Tenere, I would think they are in two totally different classes. The Tenere will be a much more sophisticated bike, and the price reflects that. Keep in mind that the KLR is a one lunger. A highly reliable one, but because of that it is a bit rough, noisy, and not the most comfortable bike in the world, but can be made to be. I see dozens of guys up here every year on their way to Inuvik. Sometimes I see them on the way back. The KLR is pretty well bullet proof, particularly from '08 on.

The Tenere will be bigger, smoother, probably quieter, more comfortable and capable of carrying a lot of stuff. Lots of electronics. That will be a minus for some folks.

For me, the shaft drive and twin cylinders on the Tenere did it for me. It is a bike I will hopefully keep for the rest of my life. Not that big of a deal given my codger status, but still ... could be a while. I think you'd enjoy either one, but if you're gonna go for long distances, I think you'd enjoy the Tenere more.

A very personal choice. A big plus for the KLR is the price. Hope this helps. R

Welcome krash!

Others here may have comments about the '09 KLR, but I had an '07 KLR and thought it was a solid bike.

Right on Rem! I sold my '09 KLR as well as part of the transition to the SuperT. Had the SuperT not come along, I probably would have kept the KLR as my second bike.
