Last time I did that I got a very annoying hard start a few hours later. Is it true that if I turn the kill switch to the off position before turning the key to the on position that I should be ok?
The fuel pump will not cycle with the kill switch in the off position and key on.
As to if that will prevent a hard start, I don't think anyone has empirical proof, but it couldn't hurt.
It's what I do.

99.99999% of the time, yes it will. Nothing in life is guaranteed, but that's how I turn on the electrical system to avoid setting myself up for the hard start issue.
