Am I the only one in the universe most likely? I look at the before and after pictures and before is always 500% better at least in looks. Function may be another story, but surely every motorcycle from a 50cc up to 2000cc is not complete junk from the factory??? Not just motorcyles, even truck owners have to do all the crap add ons which are ugly. Sorry and if you like them things that's all that matters, but I've never to this day understood. I'm getting really depressed looking at all these farkles. GPS and things like that are fine, but the rest of them, well I'm glad you like them. No offense, just seeing the pictures, I'm about sick. I guess no reason to post a picture of mine stock when I get it as I'm the only one that likes it.

Everyone has the right to an opinion. A Farkle is by definition an item with a combination of function and sparkle. I think we are typically on the function side of the equation meaning if it wasn't useful we typically wouldn't add it. If you need nothing beyond the basic bike I applaud you for being a minimalist.

I know that there's really no reason to justify, but, many of the "farkles" seen in these pictures are simply aftermarket options of the "farkles" that Yamaha offers. The first picture that I saw of the S10 was the fully farkled one on the poster hanging on the dealer's wall. That was the picture that drew me to the bike to begin with. The base model that was first offered in Europe included the panniers and top case, but ours is the stripped down version. Yes, I do like it "naked," but I happen to need side cases, and I prefer a little bit larger windshield. A big selling feature of this bike is it's versatility and it's flexible options..... one of which, is to leave it "naked." Enjoy the ride.

WEll, I have only basically added stuff for storage. I like to carry stuff I might need. And for protection of the bike which I will appreciate when I drop it in the parking lot.

So I'm sort of a minimalist farkler. AKA a Minifarker. R

I've been riding the same bike, a 1981 Yamaha XS1100SH, for thirty years now. Put a Vetter Rooster fairing on it when purchased and nothing else. Tired of "stock". I'm going to farkle away on my new ST. Already have orders with Tabasco and Wasp and the radiation stickers are on the way - thanks Hannabone! And also thanks to Venture for the "Die Hard" Stickers. It's just time for a change.

I am with ya RonH, and I might suggest that your Avatar looks ??? like a pretty well decked out ride... Hardly a bare bike. Pre-farkled at the factory ;)
LOL, that is one of the most heavily farkled bikes ever made. Missed that.

I like the bike stock, don't need no stinking farkles! Well, maybe this GPS, and this autocom (but that is under the seat and out of sight), and the panniers, maybe the topcase, ok a tankbag, but that is all for sure. Okay, the Wasp windshield adjuster. That is it!

Okay, maybe the switch for the handlebars to scroll through the computer and trip by http://www.trailtech.net/8500-RS.html. That is it!

The seat mod, to lower the back some. I'm done now for sure. Forgot the fenda extenda, added that last night, but it is hard to see (does that count). Looking at splicing in a speedohealer, but again, can't see it. I'm done here.

Exactly how I feel, except for the stuff I already bought to put on. :D

My prior bike, Honda NT700V had only two changes: better handgrips and a new seat.

Both were to address deficiencies that reduced my riding pleasure....after 5 hours, my hands and butt were getting sore. With the new items, they didn't.

On the ST, I've added storage and increased protection...both of which I felt had a better design than that offered by Yamaha. I'm also adding a wider/taller windscreen, again, for added protection. No decals or stickers (except for my DieHard)...as looks count less than function, for me. When I rode Harleys, all changes were for performance...none of that chrome junk for me.

Do what's best for you, based on your preferences and use: I plan on riding 800 miles this week...which I think would be more challenging had I not installed the bars, bags and windscreen (OK, the skid plate won't be much use).

I am addicted to loading up on farkles. Is there a support group for that? It's certainly not this forum. :)

sure enough.... FA, Farkles Anonymous - there are generally meetings once a week but you will need a sponsor. " Hi my name is troll and I am a farkle addict" ???

To farkle or not to farkle, that is the question

Whether it better benefits a man to wax squanderous with non-existent monetary reserves, or to focus on forced frugality .......

On the one had, much justification can be put forth to proliferate pulchritude, pizzazz and praxis through selected acquisitions benefitting both the rider and the pathetic droolers clustered along the highways and by-ways of life .....

While on the other, the case may be made for those who seek only to enjoy the most basic of the common pleasures of taxis and locomotion sans flair and encumbrances .... saving thus those resources which may better be utilized for restoration and replacement of basic components exposed and encountering intimate juxtapositioning with solid substances .....

Alas, it is finally only the chevalier of the cycle who may determine thusly upon which track he will proceed .....

As for me, I choose to ride not naked of baubels and accoutrements, but rather to burnish my steed with finery and quasi-useful accessories, rendering him more prone to relieve me of unnecessary and undesirable perambulation.

But that's just me ...... R

I keep mine to a minimum. GPS, radar detector, panniers and a skidplate. So far that wil be all except maybe heated grips come winter. I don't like adding weight of any kind. Nothign wrong with a stock bike Ron post that picture at least you have one follower. ;)

No, you're not alone. I only add functional items necessary for my specific uses. Bling for the sake of bling is just that to me. I've had bikes in the past where i had the chrome de-plated from items, then had them painted. I actually dislike chrome, so "lots of chrome" is not a selling point to me. I do like carefully machined aluminum, if it has a needed function.

I had them fit the Yamaha skid plate during assembly, as they happened to have one there, clever dogs. I wasn't nuts over any of them, so I'll upgrade later on as the need arises. I'd like a serious plate if I ever decide I'm spending time off road with the bike on really tough stuff. As for the time being, I want to get used to the bike and carefully modify as the need arises. I seldom have buyers remorse as i spend so much time being sure what I do will get the job I want done, done. I also had them fit PG 714 dual sport grips, as I prefer their compound, feel and shape. The stock ones feel like rubberized toilet paper tubes.

I have a set of Nelson-Rigg 850 bags to fit, as I didn't care for the "bling-ammo-can" look of the factory stuff. I will be ordering the SW Motech bag racks to properly use the N-R bags. I also want a suitable tank bag, and most likely a tail bag. I prefer soft bags. Not crow or theft proof, but not much is, if they are serious.

I have added modifications to every bike I've ever owned, but every mod was thought out, functional for a purpose that I actually needed, and carefully researched and then purchased and installed. I've never been a crowd follower, probably won't become one anytime soon.

You sound as grumpy as I'm accused of being. Good for you.
