The manual says you will get engine knock if you don't use the 91 octane gas?
I would recommend using it. I live four hours north of you. In the summer, in traffic, especially with a passenger, she'll rattle when it gets hot if you don't use the 91-octane gas. Besides, a normal fill-up only means about 5-gal, and she gets 40+mpg. So, to me, it's worth the extra money. I use Shell premium because I know it actually does keep the motor clean.

What does the manual say specifically…91 octane RON?…..or 91 octane AKI?

Perhaps, when they say that inadequate fuel can produce Knocks…they mean using “premium” fuel, “the most expensive”….”the best”…..

So I had a fellow on here say you can use the 87 unless you're loaded heavy or in hot weather. I use 87 octane and don't have a problem. I am on a trip... 30 days so far. Loaded heavy. While cool 87 was fine. Up in Alaska 87 is sometimes the only thing available. No knocking or pinging. It was near 90 in Canada so I used 91 or better. Coming down the west coast it was cooler and had no problem with 87 but I am using 91 or better as I am loaded heavy and sometimes go in land where it is very hot. If I wasn't loaded I would use 87 with no problems.

90° is just the beginning of hot. We don't drop below 90° until after midnight, and never fall below 80° at night. "Hot" is relative to humans, but when the fan kicks on . . . . the bike is hot. That's when she'll rattle if you don't use premium.

Below 100° air temp my coolant runs at 177° at 70mph. Above 100°, it runs at 185°. My fan doesn't kick on, even in town, until I start sitting at lights.

Well, if the manual says that you have to use 91 octane, then yes, it's definitely true that the manufacturer wants you to use 91 octane, My manual says 91 or higher, or RON 95 or higher. In the US, Canada and Mexico it's 91 octane, in Europe, Australia and NZ (and probably everywhere else) its RON 95.

I can only speak from my own experience, but I don't always use 91 or 93 octane; my bike has seen many, many miles running on 87 octane. I've never had any incidents of knocking or pinging, they way I did on my Harley if I didn't use a higher octane fuel. My bike just rolled over 100,000 miles last week, and so far, my occasional use of 87 octane hasn't done any harm. My oil analysis done back around 89,000 miles showed less than average wear on engine parts. I live in a pretty hot climate myself here in the south, where 90+ degree days have been the norm since June (it's 97 degrees here right now).

Does your manual actually say that you will get engine knock if you don't use 91 octane, or that knocking may result if you don't use it? My manual says to use 91 or higher octane, and to switch to a different brand of gasoline if pinging occurs.

Does using octane booster do more harm than good considering it's mostly ethanol, which everyone says is bad. Sometimes regular is all that's available in out of the way places. Discuss....

I don't think I'd bother with it, unless I was in an area with no premium fuel and I was actually having problems with engine knocking. Plus, it would add to the cost of each tank of gas.

I always look back to Nick Sanders' Alaska-Tierra Del Fuego-Alaska trip on his Super Tenere in 2011. During a giant chunk of that trip, there was no premium fuel available; in fact, there sometimes wasn't even the equivalent to 87 octane. He reported that it was only when he was running the absolute worst grade of fuel did he experience engine knock, and that he compensated for it by just using moderate throttle and keeping his speed down. That trip was about 30,000 miles, and he had the engine of his S10 torn down at around 50,000 miles, and the mechanics said it looked like it had just come out of the factory. He rode that bike hard, doing that 30,000 mile trip in 49 days. Even feeding it a diet of garbage gas, there were no long term issues.

I wouldn't tell anyone they should disregard Yamaha's recommended octane rating. That's up to the owner. Sanders' experiences, and my own personal ones, make me feel fine about using a lower grade fuel than was specced by Yamaha. If I was using 87 and it started to knock, then I'd just go to 91.

I was gonna say . . . . y'all have modified the bejeezes out y'all's bikes. So, questioning Yamaha's engineers? Everyday occurrence around here. :D

Assuming that RON, is the most widespread octane measurement in terms of countries....91 rom octane, is a medium grade gasoline (which corresponds to the 87 AKI of the USA, Canada, and a few other countries that use this methodology to measure the detonation index)…..Now regarding ethanol, the S10 has “maximum” alerts, …”E10”

I run premium unless it’s not available, other than price I have never been able to notice any difference between premium and regular.
