Well boys .... I was just perusing my new Canadian Biker magazine, and was just finishing up the article on the new BMW R1200GS, when I saw this ... the next to the last sentence of the entire article. Wait for it ........

"As far as I'm concerned, what we have here is the best motorcycle in the universe".

Now, let's be clear. These are HIS words, not mine. This is a QUOTE, oh Yamamen of ample girth and breadth. Just wanted to throw it out there. I am loathe to release the author's name lest he meet some untoward malfeasance ..... anyway, something to ponder. Heh heh. Let's be careful out there. R ::001::

The guy is a knob, plain and simple. Whether it is the best in it's class is one question and that in itself is open to a lot of debate, but it is no way, not ever, no question, the best motorcycle in the universe, of that I am absolutely certain! :)

The author of said article, one Bertrand Gahel (whose name I won't mention), appears to be of Franco descent, which may help explain this somewhat ..... possibly .... alleged ...... presumed ...... blatant ..... bias displayed in the article. Perhaps, and I don't know the man .... but just perhaps, HIS universe may be somewhat limited, and not of the cosmic proportions one normally conjures when envisioning the Universe. Just sayin' .... ::015:: R

opinions are like _ _ _ h_ _ _ s , everyone's got one.

No but seriously, three journos report huge tank slappers on the african launch, one busts a steering stop clean off the frame,
and Kevin Ash (rest in peace) is killed on the launch, and this is the worlds best bike??!

Seriously.

Let me guess BMW took out a two page in this magazine.... ::)

Indeed they did !!! As well, in addition to the four page article to whence I just referred, a picture of the GS is slathered all over the front cover of the magazine.

I rode my mates Tiger 800xc which I thought was the best bike I have ever riden (maybe it still is) but I didn't buy one!! the reason is that I think it's wasn't the best bike for me, the S10 won but the Tiger is still 1 hell of a bike.
The problem I see is that too many people listen to the wrong advise or run with what looks cool to have in the garage or what is percieved to be the best and don't get their ass on different bikes, even the same type of bike but different ones. As with my case I rode 2 different S10's and they were very different and half hour test rides don't do you any favours.
The Bmw is a great bike for meeting people (service advisors, tow truck drivers, mechanics, other bikers stopping to help etc) but thats not for me.
The S10 is a great bike and I love mine more every day but it to has a few small issues like the default traction controls setting, the windscreen but it's something I can live with. I got off a Buell and everytime I stopped at a servo somebody would come up and ask me about it I though getting the S10 this would stop but it hasn't weird thing is it's the ladies that stop to chat now

Of course it is the best bike in the Universe, it has only had 3 recalls and a delayed launch.

Much better than the last GS launch, 50% of them would not start due to faulty EWS rings and the other 50% came back on a truck before the owners got them home due to either a Fuel Pump Controller or Final Drive Issue, both of which plagued the bike for the following nine years....

... BMW have already managed to stop such a disatrous day one by not letting anyone have the bike they have paid for yet, and the FD and FPC issues have been resolved as the bike will slap itself into a ditch / to pieces before either of these components fail ::008::

You don't get this sort of "Blue Sky Thinking" from the Japs ;)

AS you say this is all about opinions and I would agree the GS in general is a good bike in many ways, and I made the choice between the S10 , 1200 Gs and Explorer solely on my needs, the main one being reliability which is why I bought Japanese. I figure that if I was offered a bike for a rental and the 3 were there to choose from I may well choose the BM as long as it came with recovery and a maintenance crew, this is how journos test a bike; thrash it all day and hand it back, not live with it for several years and thousands of miles. I have always lusted after Ducatis but would never own one......

Oooh...The emperor is wearing underpants article..

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2013-bmw-r1200gs-the-incomplete-homework-56113.html

Does Auto evolution not get paid?

In other breaking news...

BMW BOYS NOT HAPPY WITH AUTO EVOLUTION ARTICLE. EXTREME BIAS CLAIMED.
Oh and just in case you find it hard to keep up because maybe you are too busy riding or farkling..The best bike in the universe has the following problem count..

Recall 1: the output shaft sealing ring, Recall 2: The ASC software, Recall 3, though not 100% a recall, meant the delays because the Telelever meeting the steering plate, Recall 4: the fork issue. Now, we've just reported these matters, without passing the hard judgement you believed we did. The purpose of conveying information is to let people know, for good or for worse.
Now it's not fair of course because there are so many out there..like about 100 or something.

It will be a great seller as usual. This bike seems to have even more character than the last one.
