I recently installed some oxford heated grips and when deciding which side to mount the controller, I took off both L & R mirrors, On returning the mirrors, I did not remember that the Right side mirror had a reverse thread and proceeded to try to force the mirror home damaging the top two threads before decicing to stop. STUPIDLY!!! I asked a freind to run a Tap down the thread to "clean" it (still blissfully ignorant of the reverse thread) this he did and then went to screw in the mirror...... at which point he showed me the thread on the mirror stud, laughed at me and said he would order a reverse Tap to rectify or possibly use a Helicoil. Any other suggestions? or do I pay the price for being a complete Wally??
Cheers
Rob

How about a set of 'conventional' mirrors with 10mm threads ? Or is it buggered completely ? You could use liquid metal or a putty to build it up and then re-tap with a left hand thread, it's not structural after all and just a mirror mount.

I would forget the southern engineering and fix it back to new. I don't know about on your side of the big pond, but the master cylinder can be picked up over here for less them $50.

I'm not sure what a "wally" is but I'm getting the feeling it's not a good thing :-\

A Wally is the same as a TGP ( thick geordie plank ) my old man calls me that when I screw up. Been there done that , made a mess of the nut when I first tried to remove the mirror.

Don't panic. There is still a fair chance that there will be enough thread contact for the mirror to tighten down ok, once tapped with the left hand thread tap.

Try that first and report back.

Well Guys,

I am very pleased with myself having declared myself a Wally earlier! Purchased a Mirror extender from ebay for £8. This has a reverse thread for the mirror fitment, so I simply swapped the supplied reverse threaded bolt for a normal threaded bolt and "Bob is your Mothers Brother" plus I now have a mirror extender which was on my list of farkles to do, all be it way down the list!!
