Without reading the article I'll guess it's over engeneered and the faithful will gobble them up.

Last time this came around it was a hybrid:

My response is still that I can buy a Christini and get parts 8 miles from home. US Special Ops has had Christini bikes for a long time, they've been in dealers for years, and they are assembled in the US. The engine is Honda 450 clone.

Nice article here:

Too much maintenance and monkey motion for my needs.

If all it is, is an electric motor in the front hub I can't see much maintenance involved other than being extra weight and damn expensive to get fixed.
And yes the deep pocket faithful will be wanting to show this off at the monthly SB rally.
Why can't they make something that is back woods maintenance friendly instead of adding more SH*t that leaves you stranded scratching your head.
And yes that would be the Tenere? ::) I am talking less Electronic BS.

I can't imagine what the suspension would be like dealing with all that un-sprung weight. Would be feeling a bit like a truck with that on. This is the reason those Hub Drive motors were ditched in EV's in favour of central drive motors and shafts.

More weight on the front wheel = harder to wheelie. ::007::

interesting, but I am really waiting for the day of the autonomous motorcycle [driverless]...
that way your motorcycle could go out and have a good time without you,

exactly the same as the autonomous cars everyone seems to be soooo excited about lately.....

I'll pass on the automated bike, thank you. But I'm in for an automated car. As a guy that commutes 24K miles a year in DC traffic I despise driving cars.

I think it was Porsche who came up with the idea about 100 years ago - didn't really catch on, other than for slow moving vehicles, due to the sprung weight issue others have mentioned.

There have been other convoluted systems tried on bikes, with chains & pulleys (dangerous), as well as hydraulic drives which seem OK, if a bit cumbersome.

Having been there, I had to smile at cakeboys take - how true.

But surely, being BMW, they should engineer a shaft driven front end. Carry the shaft down one fork leg & make the front hub a mini bevel box. With hybrid power, it would handle like a dog, but could prove useful in mud & snow - perfect for the Eastern Front. ;D

I asked Ramseybella if we could delete his post, as it's kind of a warning about how another member might respond, and Ramsey was fine with it. On second thought, I'm not going to "over moderate" as some call it. Instead, I see that the other member has been on the forum today and want to commend him for biting his tongue.
Thank you un-named member!

For the sake of ord13 and any other noobs around here, what is going on is the human process of constantly re-learning to play well with others. In this case, we have a member who has owned a lot of BMWs and we've had some not-so-fun exchanges when folks have made negative comments about Beemers. What we've had to come to understand is that this is a model-specific forum and there's going to be bashing of other brands in any model specific forum. Want to see how hard you can bite your own tongue? Go check out the GS forums for how folks discuss the Super Tenere.
:'(

Anyway, just keep it honest and attack the argument or even the brand, expect the same about your favorite "whatever," but please . . .
. . . don't make it personal or intentionally provoke another member.

Unless you are sitting right there with him and he just refused to buy you a beer when it's his turn, of course.
;)

Thanks all!

Here I am, just as predicted! :D ::26::

I'm old enough to remember the skepticism with earlier innovation when they were first introduced on motorcycles. Things like EFI, disc brakes, halogen lighting, LED lighting, ABS, TC, ride by wire, CC, dynamic functions, integrated GPS, etc.. I can remember when power windows or AC wasn't even an option in high end automobiles! And I can remember when I had hair growing on my head and not out of my ears!
Progress can't be kept in check.

BMW has been successful in pushing technology to motorcycles in part because of their experience with the technology in their automobiles. It is one of the things that allows them a to brand their products as "premium", and it is a means of differentiating themselves in the market place. They then recover the development/testing costs by charging a premium price for their products. I say good on them! ::008:: Then when suppliers/vendors are able to provide the technology to other manufactures at a reasonable cost others benefit. Nut'n wrong with dat!

I keeping with the spirit of this thread I'll ignore the haters and simply ask ....... what new innovations has Yamaha brought to the game recently?

I think the word hate or anything that inflammatory has ever came up in any of the Beamer poking Paul.
I don't hate anything, I don't like thing with a high failure potential..
The dig of what new technology has Yamaha come up with lately?
Nothing as I can see and that is an easy pill to swallow my friend!!
I don't want anymore that's how Sh*t starts developing a failure potential...

Beside the fact that Yamaha developed the hydraulic front drive years ago . But could not justify production .

agree, we need innovators, we may laugh at the 'concepts' that don't see production but we shouldn't laugh at the intent,
this idea could spell the end of the need for an alternator, we already have eco cars where the alternator only produces current when engine is coasting or slowing - using waste energy.
good on BMW I say, and that's not something I am known for saying!
