Not so fast. The S10 is not showing up among the 2013 model overview for Yamaha USA. Perhaps the S10s they are selling now are actually excess. Regardless of how many were sold, I guess YAMAHA must also see the stateside S10 sales figures as a 'flop.' That's too bad. Perhaps if YAMAHA wouldn't have done such a weak stateside promotion they might have done much better.
Will have to wait for the fall to see Yamaha's street lineup for 2013. They only announced 2013 model year dirt-bikes.

Mark, perhaps you would be interested in this bike that was brought to our MSTA national for feedback as to whether they should import it. This is the one that I told the rep that my opinion is that it would not selll nearly as well as the Crosstourer. Perhaps it would sell in CA, but not to the midwest customers that I have experienced while working in sales at a Honda/Yamaha dealer.

BTW, after another discussion this morning, including the recall VIN's and the later units, he said he wil lask for more detail and clarification when he gets back to Torrance.

What's PDP?
It's Yamaha's Priority Delivery Program. Certain bikes the ST (and FJR's for years) were only available if you pre-ordered and put down a deposit. There is a ordering window that your order and deposit would have to be placed. Then you wait, and wait, and eventually the bikes would arrive and are supposedly filled in the order they were ordered (or there abouts).

Yamaha does this because they are not sure of the demand of the bikes and don't want to end up with a warehouse of bikes that they cannot sell (this was the problem with the wonderful TDM-850 in '92 & '93 - they sat for years until blown-out - mine was bought new in 1995 at about half of list).

They did this with the highly successful FJR for many years and for the ST. What was surprising was how quickly Yamaha went from PDP to normal stock on the ST. That shows the demand must have met and exceeded some sales level where it was profitable for Yamaha to stock them. Quite a feat in our current state of the economy.

::026:: on that. I loved my '80 CB750F. 150,000 trouble free miles on mine when I sold it to buy Honda's version Kawasaki's H1-Mach III 'flexible flyer' - the V65 Sabre. Fast, complicated to work on, fast, and handled like a wet noodle (it liked to tank slap) with the Hondaline sport fairing and bags.

That's wierd, because they had the street overview on the website yesterday, but today it has vanished.

When I picked my bike up I asked the dealer how the sales were considering they let some people back out in May and he told me that Yamaha USA had sold about 1300 units via PDP and that was considered good.

Yamaha moves in pretty strange ways with respect to the PDP and I don't consider the fact that the S10 went off PDP in a year to be particularly significant. Yamaha may have simply decided that the PDP is no longer the way to sell this particular bike in its 2nd year, hot sales or slow sales.

Has another Yamaha gone off PDP this quick? I am only familiar with the FJR, which was on PDP for years and my basis for comparison.

I may be wrong, but I think the FJR and S10 are the only bikes sold under the PDP. Which is sorta my point - too small a sample to really draw any hard conclusions about why Yamaha does or does not put a bike on PDP.

PDP fosters a tremendous amount of ill-will within the Yamaha motorcycle dealership community as it tends to encourage fly-ride buying and puts local dealers under margin pressure to try and price match the cut-rate pricing at the volume dealers. So one scenario for taking the S10 off PDP has nothing to do with sales - in a time when hundreds of small dealerships are in danger of going under due to poor sales, Yamaha may simply not want to continue a program that further increases their problems.

You may be right, but I guess I'm just saying that it is hard to know.

Wasn't the new Vmax PDP 1st year?
I recall it was. And if so, this might be a good example bike that was PDP For a year and then went regular flooring despite modest sales. From what I understand, the Gen II V-Max is a pretty slow seller, especially since the Diavel appeared.

An update: This evening the Honda rep apologized, as he called HQ about the numbers he had been given and it turned out to be quarterly numbers, not total sales as he had been lead to believe. That makes more sense.

Wow, it's not often nowadays anybody issues an apology, especially for spreading misinformation. Hats off to the Honda rep for correcting himself. Either way, this thread has generated some positive conversation regarding the S10. No damage done, thanks for the update. I love this forum.

P.S. I am loaded with beer right now.

Yes, we agreed that now he has more ammunition to use in trying to get the Crosstourer over here.

He has a seminar scheduled for this evening to discuss what types of bikes that sport touring/adventure touring/touring riders would like to see. Supposedly some hints as to what they have in the works. Too late for many of us former Honda loyalists that are in love with our Super Teneres, though. :)

Yep, they lost out. I was a V4 nut - having owned a VFR800 and being in absolute love with that engine - there really is nothing else quite like it. Honda missed the boat, yet again, on an opportunity to (at least) convert aging VFR owners to a bike that fits what the demographic is looking for. Props to Yamaha for bringing the Tenere Stateside - they've converted me from being a hardcore Hondaphile...

Yep, those 2000 model-year yellows are classics! I would scoop one up in a heartbeat if I came across the right deal...
