Unless it's below freezing, the mixture in a gasoline tank is too rich to burn.
Do you know how very low the number of supposedly intelligent people are that know this? Thank You!

FYI Diesel is the reverse, too lean to burn. Mix the 2 in a container of any sort and you have a problem.

wreckerchecker knows all kinds of weird stuff.

Sitting around camp with him CAN be enlightening, if you get him to open up.
He's too much a gentleman to dominate the conversation though. :)

I went looking at the filler tube, to determine where this vent hole should be positioned.

I don't see where to put it. I had the gas cap and hinge assembly removed, with 6 screws, an easy job.....................

.................Anyway, apparently the common wisdom is to open another vent hole, but I could not determine where to place it.

Any ideas, please?

I have a few holes punched in mine. This is just the first one. Like Checkswrecks I have done the same on both of my Teneres and a couple of FJRs. These Yamaha bikes feature that very substantial filler neck, as opposed to say my old Honda Blackbird that just had an enormous opening and no filler neck at all.

I used a long screwdriver - plastic handle - and placed cloth at the filler neck to prevent damage. Its just a few taps and a bit of a wriggle and there is no swarf. No need to remove the cap.

The punched 'vents' make filling much faster as the air can get out of smaller holes than the fuel needs to get in. The bubbling and fiddling that occurs in the OEM set-up if you are trying to squeeze in a few extra cups does not happen once the holes are punched.

The orange grommet is the overflow aperture. It is outside of the cap seal, and fuel that finds its way in there ("oops I overfilled") is carried away by rubber hose to the ground under the bike.

I ran out of fuel on my way to work today. Fuel trip said 32.1 miles travelled. Tank refill took 22 litres. Av fuel consumption was 40mpg (UK).
I was a bit surprised the fuel trip range wasn't greater - was hoping for 40-50. Luckily it happened next to a filling station.
