I have seen several posts around the webs talking about how wonderfully great the Tenere's gearbox is. I must admit that mine, well, isn't. It's a 2012 with 27k on it now, and it's the stiffest and clunkiest trans I've rowed through in years. I've got premium synth oil in it, and I checked the linkage, all good.

Don't get me wrong, it's not awful, or broken, but it isn't a transmission that I would guess that folks would rave about. I did check to see f the clutch drags and it doesn't; everything is in perfect working order. Maybe I'm unlucky? Anyone else feel that the Tenere trans is a big agricultural, or does everyone else have a buttery smooth 'box I'm not at all concerned about this, just curious at all. I admit that when I test rode bikes I didn't notice any of them, including the one I bought...kinda lame, I know.

note: on my bike the sidestand deployment lever is in my way when I try to shift, and also for me personally the shifter tang that you hook your toe under is a bit undersized for me. Since I"ve never one ever used that sidestand lever (just using the pad is easier for me in every way) I think I might cut it off (leaving the spring) and also get a better-fitting shift lever. It is possible that these 2 factors are conspiring to cloud my transmission impressions...

You said that you "checked" the linkage, but did you lube everything? Mine shifted clunky until I greased the shifter pivot and lubed the linkage. It's a common issue. As far as everything else, modify it so it works for you.

Grease after cleaning it is 90% of shifting issues on this bike the trans is a little tractor like. My Triumph 1050 Tiger was an Agricultural clunker.
I have size 14 boots and never had an issue shifting or rear breaking on this bike nothing ever got in my way to hinder my shifting.

As for the side stand, a lot of folks have cut the tang off or had it break off, which is probably why Yamaha changed the Gen2 side stand.

Cut mine off a long time ago. Useless.

My S10 up-shifts beautifully, down-shifts could be better.

It shifts like a tractor.

with only 1400 miles on mine I hope it breaks in some. And yes it's lubed ::003::

For some reason this bike takes a long time to break in, with a lot of folks talking nearly 5,000 miles.

I don't like the shifting on my bike, especially downshifting on the street. I simply can't come up to a light and quickly downshift through all the gears as I slow down. I have to downshift at speed and blip the throttle to get a nice downshift.

Once I am on a dirt road though, the bike has absolutely no issues with the transmission.

Compared to my Honda ST1300, the Tenere's transmission is a bit smoother feeling at the lever. I also noticed it takes a bit more lever travel to complete a shift than the Honda. Agricultural? No, not mine, I find it about average to better than average among all the motorcycle transmissions I've experienced.

This is my situation as well, but I have 27k miles. I guess that's just how it is.

Ya my linkage is properly lubed and adjusted. Doesn't fix the agricultural feel of the transmission.

I greased my shifter drum with Green Grease when I first got the bike and I have tried a few different types of motor oil so far. The 1st to 2nd shifts are pretty clunky in either direction. 2nd through 6th gear are smooth but 1st and 2nd will probably take 5,000 or more miles to really break in.

My 2016 S10 ES shifts so smooth I cannot even feel like it is engaging. A far cry from my FJR which is not terribly clunky, but still an effort and thunk when up shifting and down shifting.

The GSA is just downright the clunkiest tranny that I have ever shifted on a bike.
