TNWalker and I have been jonesing to get out and ride so the plan was to get out early and ride some dirt stay in the shade as much as possible. He lives about 75 miles from me so he trailered over knowing it would be a real hot ride home. We ate a good breakfast and took off about 0930 not early enough to beat the heat. It was comfortable in the hollows following the creeks but that doesn't last forever.

I had been wanting to scout some roads on google maps in a huge track of woods. I thought they would be logging type roads. We came around a curve to a gated driveway but no house just large barns in the distance. The road was straight ahead but not maintained in years grass had taken it over. A few places woods had taken it over. This is on google maps, hard to see the road.

We were riding along and I saw a deer in this field and kept watching it. Watched it to long and centered these holes.

Brilliant! We had a good laugh and picked the beast up and continued on. A plug for Alt ride bars and ACD plate. I've dropped my bike a bunch and this stuff works. Very happy with this set up for the off pavement riding. We came to one section that had eroded and I high centered the Tenere

it stood all by itself. Steve being on the DR went down in the ditch around me and came back up in front of me. We took a break in the shade as it was hot!!!! We both pulled the Ten forward by the crash bars and unstuck it. A little more ruff stuff and got on a good logging road. We ended up coming out at the edge of someone yards. Oops! Then it was off to find some air conditioning and pie. The Log Cabin exit 148 I 40 was just what we needed and only 4 miles away. Sorry great pie but no pics. Here's Steve

Another fun day with a Tenere brother after pie it was just to hot to ride we came back to my place and cooled off. It was an exhausting morning. Steve hope you feel alright today I was wiped out. Last night I dreamed Sidney Poitier was riding with us and I introduced him to my mother in law and she was tickled. That's how hot it was!

True grip I also have the same crash bars and have been down many a times they work great. The only damage I have every gotten was when I new I was going down. I ejected myself and my boot but a dent in my tank as I jumped off.

Once again had the pleasure of riding with True Grip out in his neck of the woods and as always it proved to be a great ride. The day started off with a great home cooked breakfast at the True Grip Retreat along with the pleasant company of his wonderful Bride, Sheila.
We knew that it was going to be a hot Tennessee summer day so we headed out as early as we could. The heat did not disappoint and we were searching quickly for shaded roads. First stop was at this nice little creek where the water felt cool as ice compared to the thick Tennessee air.

We took a detour to check out a future home spot on some very nice rolling hills nearby from the relative comfort of the shade trees.

Soon after we took a road that eventually turned into a mere suggestion of a road that skirted a large cattle farm. The trail was heavily overgrown and hid many marshy spots, ruts, and holes that required focused attention to navigate. This is when Marks inner Marlin Perkins took over when some deer bolted in front of us and took a little too long to gawp at them resulting in this
"I swear I only looked away for a second" LOL

Shortly after that the trail deteriorated in to a major washout of ruts and ditches too deep to just ride across (for some anyway ;) ) This is where we high centered Mark's bike while trying to get it over one of the ruts. We decided to take a bit of a breather as it was now full on Tennessee hot and humid, with no breeze at all at this point. We then got his bike through by pulling it from the excellent Alt Rider crash bars that made a great handle to tug on. The ACD skid plate performed great too. marks bike is a testament o what the Tenere', properly kitted, can do.
"How did that dang DR get past me" Finally the trail did get more passable although you could tell that no one had been on it in quite some time. We continued on and flushed out some more wildlife along the way and soon came out in some ones backyard. OOPS! We then headed on down a now familiar road to go and get some iced tea and pie and a good cooling off break. I too neglected to get pie pics but rest assured it was really good.

After refueling we considered doing a bit more exploring, but the heat of the day won out so we just headed on back to the True Grip Retreat for an ice cold beer and a cooling sit under the fans and A/C in the loft before I loaded up and headed back to my home. I was pretty tired after the events of the day but it was a good tired. The kind you get after having a great day. I slept like a rock that night, no dreams of Sidney Poitier or anything like that.... LOL :D

Thanks again Mark for a great ride and a great day. I truly enjoyed meeting your wonderful Bride and the food and hospitality are much appreciated. I hope we can plan more rides and fellowship in the near future.

On a side note: I took my new DR 650 knowing that I would be more capable of handling a lighter bike in the rough stuff and it did not disappoint at all. I was very pleased with it's performance and capabilities in rough stuff and on roads. It far exceeded my expectations and I am thrilled to have it. While I won't ever be getting rid of my Tenere', the DR will definitely be getting some attention from me when the trails promise to be challenging. I am so blessed and lucky to have 2 of the best bikes in the world at my disposal. Like having an extra tool in the box for when you need it.

Cheers ::021::

Looks like a great day of riding guys.

Mark - those deer are pure evil. When you see them expect bad things to happen. I consider myself to be an authority on the subject. Deer bad. Deer + Tenere...like I said, they are evil.

Steve - Could not agree more on the DR. I've had mine almost a year now and so pleased I made the switch from the WR to the DR. The DR is a blast to ride and so easy to take into anything you care to ever tackle. I don't see mine going anywhere for a very long time.

Thanks for the write-up, boys. Always like seeing how our board brings us together. ::008::

It's mid to upper 90's and high humidity. North is a better option right now. Hope you all have a great trip and I'll be ready summer of 18. May have to change jobs in order to get the time off. I got a feeling my boss would rather give me the time off.

Bob
I was hoping no one had phones, Off the Grid, No GPS, Lost for days, No contact with the real world. Can't wait.
I do have a Spot so Michelle can keep track of me, I'll send you a link.
