So I've had my bike 8 days now and at 6:30 yesterday morning I decided I needed a better screen as the wind noise and buffetting was way too much. I've ordered a Madstad bracket from the US but couldn't wait and the reports of other screens were not encouraging. I'm 189cm (6'3") and live in Queensland in Oz so cold was not really an issue. Noise and buffetting were the enemy. My recent experience trying to reduce buffetting on a cruiser meant I'd already done the research. The screen needed to be higher and I wanted to easily be able to see over the top. This first version doesn't have a foil turned up at the top but will be adjusted again soon. This was made with a piece of acrylic, a jigsaw, sander and then a blow torch to heat the acrylic. I'm going to borrow a heat gun next time I want to bend the acrylic as the heat gun is less than perfect. The whole took less than 2 hours.

I test rode it yesterday and it is a 97% success. Once I bend the top into a foil the air will completely miss the top of my helmet. As it is I ride in a bit of a slouch (normal) I don't get any buffetting.

Cheers

Dang, your pretty handy. If I could do that as easy as you make it sound, I would have an arsenal of screens. One for every mission.

Nice job.

And welcome aboard.

I had the pleasure of touring your parts on an S10. It was one of my all time best motorcycle adventures. But I won't say more, or these oldtimers around here will start eye rolling.

Nice work there. I, too, have struggled with screens at 6'5" tall. Currently running an MRA Vario + Madstad, but wish for just a small amount more. Still, better than what I had before.

What are the dimensions of your screen? Width, Height...

Thanks, mate!

It is exactly standard width but is +7". So that makes it 24" high and is mounted in the lowest position. Instead of moving higher I will add the small bend at the top which is the equivalent in aerodynamic terms of an extra 3". I did this on my cruiser and see that Memphis Shades are now doing the same thing.

I'm glad you enjouyed touring in Oz. The screens really are easy to make. I'm making a super short version out of black lexcen for summer and desert riding. I'll put a photo up when finished. Maybe I should make a short video of how to make screens so everyone can have a go.

NICE JOB!

Making one totally from scratch frequently ends up with distortions &/or bubbles. The heat from a torch is too localized and usually is better to make bends than gentle curves. I made my own previous shield from one originally made for a Burgman scooter. I think it was from National Cycle and they were blowing out old inventory for something like $27-$28.

This was the extra tall scooter shield with the top & bottom trimmed:

This is another shot of it on the Tenere and the the shield on the old 'Strom that we did make from scratch. For reference on size, my son in the orange is a bit over 6'3".
The Strom's came out great, but since that one and later making a mess of DCStrom's old one with a heat gun (it bubbled) when we put in a NACA vent, I either buy a real one or modify:

Hey Checkswrecks, yeah the blowtorch is a bit tricky. You need to be very patient. The bends in this screen took about 15-18 mins of slowly bringing the heat up. I'm getting a heat gun and am going to make a template for an extra small screen so I get clean air on my chest and head. Should be good for hot weather and desert work. I'm very impressed with your screens.

First, I think it looks great and that you made it yourself....the only problem is you made it out of acrylic. Take a look at the comparison between polycarbonate and acrylic. Polycarbonate vs Acrylic Plastic
My mistake, it is polycarbonate I have been using. I didn't really know so I went and checked after you prompted me. Might do a bit of research...

Nice job Mate!!

I was wondering how do the side wings work on the Tenere and I assume the purpose is to deflect wind coming up at you?

Trust me as a one time 46000 mile Triumph Tiger 1050 owner I am a hardened Veteran to wind noise and buffeting, the Tenere is a wind kitten by comparison.. ::017::
