I typically use a ratchet strap over the reat seat to hold the wheel up and in place. Makes taking it on and off easier. This is my first shaft drive and honestly I am a bit nervous about taking the rear off. The whole ABS sensor thing and other goodies kind of makes me nervous. I dont know why.....i am pretty mechanical and have dne suspension swaps on cars, exhaust systems, headers...a bunch of stuff, but this makes me nervous a bit. I might go to the local yamaha dealer and have the tech do it and let me watch.

It seems like there is a lot of threads on this, so would smeone make a how to video?

When I get back from Whitehorse I'll need new shoes again. If no one else has done one by then, I may try. I'll at least do it with stills, both wheels. But seriously, it is pretty easy.

The basics are here. I have now done it, three times each front and rear. All I'd add to what's in the link is to be sure re-align the detents on the speed sensor housings. Use a zip tie to hold the rear brake caliper assembly if you want. Be aware that if you don't pull them there a few parts that my fall off the wheels.... speed sensor housings, a spacer on the front wheel, and the cush drive hub and rubbers on the rear wheel. These are no worries. Just put them back for reassembly.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a 1/2 inch threaded rod coupling for $1.49. It fits perfect. You are right, you don't need it for the rear wheel as you simply tap the axel out but you do need it for the front wheel. ::001::

Home Depot and Loew's have it right across the aisle from the drawers of hardware. Looks like a plain piece of hexagonal 3/4" bar with a threaded hole in it. Can use either a 3/4" or 19mm wrench on the bar.
