Highway/Freeway performance

I am looking to buy a Super T in the Phoenix area but can't find dealers willing to let me take a test ride. One dealer let me ride the Triumph Tiger800 and BMW R1200GS but did not sell Yamaha's. I want a Super T but want to see how it performs on the highway/freeway. I am sure it will do spectacular off road, but some of the rides I want to do are over 5 hours of highway riding to get there. Any feedback from you lucky S-T owners? Please include any down sides. This won't necessarily deter me from this apparently awesome machine, as my current bike is a Yamaha V-star 650. I just rode it 6 hours each way to Vegas and back and it was a little bit of a chore to do it.

Thanks,

Sean

The S10's highway manners are as good as it gets in this class of bike. Big, upright, roomy cockpit, relaxed, great engine torque, and vibes well controlled (but still a twin). Okay weather protection, although not as good as something like a FJR. Very comparable to the GS. Some reports say the GS is a slightly better road bike, others say the S10. Same for dirt. Mostly splitting hairs. If you liked the big GS on the highway, you'll like the S10.

Should be a HUGE step up from a V-Star 650.

I would never call any of these big traillees "spectacular off road" as they're simply way too heavy and too limited suspension travel to be decent dirt bikes, but they'll get down dirt roads well enough.

Completely agree with Mark.

Get the Super Tenere. You'll love it.

I do a lot of highway, since I live in a flat part of the world and I like to travel to the less-flat places every chance I get. The Super Ténéré is fantastic for this. In fact I think it's better than a bike with more wind protection, because the ergos are so much better. A long ride is easier because I'm less folded up; the riding position is very natural. The windshield is pretty good and with appropriate riding gear I don't need big fairing lowers to protect my feet and ankles from the wind.

I wouldn't worry about highway rides at all.

I agree with Elizilla 100%. I own a FJR and a S10 and for a 6'1" guy the S10 fits much better.
I just returned from a trip to New Orleans from Washington , Indiana on my S10. All slab comming home and logged 738 miles in one day on it. Yes I was sore when I got home but my wife once had a 650 V-Star and I can tell you I would not try that with her old bike.
Hope this helps

2 months ago I rode 5000km/3100miles in 52 hours on mainly highways (There are no divided superslabs in the Australian outback) and arrived home pain free. This bike excels at hours and hours in the saddle.

Just did a round trip of 4 hrs mix of 25% 65 mph posted slab - 75% fast two laners. Previous three bikes were FJRs. Absolutely no issues. Mark was spot on with the big comfy cockpit. Stretches me out over the seating postition of the FJR. I like it!

I’ve had some 10-12 hour days in the saddle and have been very pleased with the comfort and highway performance…and I use the stock saddle. I have the stock screen at the higher setting, which is working out fine for me. Ergos have been perfect for the longer trips and the S10 cruises smoothly and consistently all day. Coming back from the Birmingham last October I hit some horrible weather. Heavy rain, wind, wrecks and jams. I’ve been in similar but I was glad to be on the S10 in all that crap. It's a well balanced motorcycle. In a couple weeks I’ve got a 3,200 mile trip that will be 2,600 on Interstates; wish I had time to do the scenic route but I’m actually looking forward to the ride the way it is! :)

I did a SSgold and BBgold the weekend following picking up My S10 at the dealer.
That's 1500miles in <24hours and finishing up the 2000 miles in less than 36 total.
So ya I think it's a good enough road bike.

Thanks again. This forum rocks. If I could just get the local dealers to stop playing the games of " I can't tell you my best price, but I will beat anyone else's best price" I would have one in my garage right now.

Wouldnt worrie to much about a test ride, just buy it and you will love it. The S10 has a personality of its own and so far is the favorite of all the bikes ive owned.
And ive had some good ones.

I liked that Ford commercial, "It is a pretty big deal!".

I personally feel that if you can get one out the door for 14.5 or less its a steal! Its such a great motorcycle for the price point you can't go wrong. If you can't get a test ride on the S10, try to get a ride on a GS. The differences in how they handle are negligible, and supported by many comparison articles. I rode a GS and fell in love with the motor and how it handled but did not want the GS. I bought the tenere with no test ride and the only regret I have is I don't make enough money to farkle it as fast as I would like! ::022::

Give me a call at 209-596-1002. I bought mine in Prescott Valley (about 1 hour 45 min from Mesa) and they let me test ride.

You are gonna love it!

I had to look through the IBA finishers list. I wanted to see Super Tenere there in the BBG section. I found you, a Yamaha "Super". They can list bikes like a Harley "Road glide custom ultra", but yamaha finishers no room for Super Tenere, only "Super". :D Good job on the ride.
I had better hurry up and submit mine then.

I tried for a back to back BBG, but fuel supply problems toasted the beginning of the second leg. ::26::
BBGs are a bit longer in metric countries, so I covered the distance required for BBG3000 miles in 48 hours, but too slow for 5000km in 48 hours.

I ride mine 25 miles to work on toll roads at 75 to 80 and have no issues in cruising that speed. The seat is a matter of personal taste as mine is new I have only went 100 miles out so far and I can tell right now that I wouldnt mind hitting the superslab on it to go to Utah from here . I dont think I can do the 900 miles like on the goldwing but then the wing was piss poor on anything but slab. I do miss the cruise
