High fender/LED location discussion....

There is a discussion over on Wasp's ADVrider evolution thread about production of a high fender and mounting the LED's down on the fork tubes via bullet clamps. The prototype of the fender looks pretty cool. It reminds me of the high fender on the original concept video, the one with the zebra stripe motif. The plan also includes the incorporation of some kind of screen to keep mud and debris from steering head, headlight assembly, and upper engine area along with fork tube slider protectors.

+2! This is one of the farkles I've been hoping for. In my bifocal impaired eyes it gives the Super 10 a much more rugged, purposeful look. Way to go WASP!!

I like the low fender look.
Seems most of the Dakar rally bikes use low fenders. Not an argument, just saying!

Dakar bikes go low because they are in dry conditions. If you ride a bike in serious mud, a low fender is a huge problem. Now whether you should be riding any 575+ lb bike in serious mud is another question.

Correct, and where I live mud outnumbers sand by a significant factor. There will be some occasions when I will not be able to avoid assorted slop and a high fender will be of great value.

Obviously haven't seen some of the Dakar shots this year. Dakar not in the Sahara anymore. That said there are some big dune sections and plenty of desert.

I love the looks of the ST both ways...so what to do. Buy two and deck them out differently? Maybe one road muh-cheen set up for road riding and the long haul and one more offroad oriented with knobbies, high fender, and stripped of everything that isn't absolutely necessary to lighten it up? But then, that is what I have lighter bikes for, so that is not realistic. Fun to think about though!

Ha! +1 on that chad. Better get your order in soon for the 2nd one, though.

Although the high fender looks nice to me, as do the knobbies that many (including Greg have mounted), it's just not my intended purpose of the bike. The most "hard=core" off road I expect to ever be are fire roads and will make every attempt to avoid any mud holes I come across!!! :D

The added parts are going to run more than the bike. Why don`t we ride the bike first before we modify them. That is from a European riding buddy of mine. Use the money for gas not parts and paint.

Having had a think about it a bit...I think I'll go for twin brake lines slider protection and a sacrificial low-ish fender.

I am not a big beak fan aesthetically, but as a functional piece OK if needed.

I am going to do a typical consumer here...

IMO It needs to be more integrated, like maybe some flow (design and function) into the air intake. I don't think it has to protect the engine. Something else can be used for that that disappears a bit. Of course I have no idea what that will look like but at least it helps air flow and mud and stone problems. A beak is not an aesthetic improvement to me. It's a functional piece and it may as well serve as many functions as possible.

I notice also that many beaked bikes also come with the low fender. I assume that is an ADR requirement? (DOT to you Yanks).

OUCH! That leaves me feeling bruised just watching that clip.

Interesting thing in my mind is, since 2009 I've only read (I'm sure there have been others) 2 crash posts involving the front wheel locking up or otherwise seperating from the forks and they both happened on BMW's ???

Perhaps in this case, having a brake line looped over the tire/fender from caliper to caliper is not such a great idea?

Wow! Wham, BAM! that was a hard, fast crash. Glad he didn't get hurt too bad. That is one thing that I fear most is some kind of random mechanical failure while riding fast.

That did not look like fun. Great footage of the whole thing. I would like to know more about how it failed though.
