Hi - My names Rob and im a bike mad idiot :)

52 years young, been riding since i was 17 always owned a bike but a few years when the kids were younger i didn't get out much.

Now doing more miles than ever i commute , go out for fun, been to Spain 3 times on my current bike a 2004 DL 1000, rock solid reliable and cheap to run but i fancy a change ive done 35K miles on it now its on 44k so ready for a change.

Been looking at all the adventure bikes as I'm 6'2" with a dodgy knee so i need a good distance between bum and footpeg. Came down to a BMW GS, Guzzi STelvio or a Tenere, the other 2 seem to have a number of issues (stelvio in general) and the rear drive bearings on the GS.

So looking for a bargain S10 - not bothered about pretty as i will get it really mucky and im lazy at cleaning - So learned S10 owners what do i need to look for any models best avoided etc - any advice welcome - thanks !!!!!!

Although the others have similar ergos, I found the S10 to be the best when it came to knee bend (less is better) so you are on the right track. No serious issues with the bike, they rattle like a tool box being thrown down metal stairs, but you get use to that, several high mileage S10 have had Cam Chain Tensioner (CCT) failures, others have carried out prevention methods of either new model CCT or a manual CCT, that will cure most of the start up rattle, also the 2012-2014 Gen 1 model had a rattly clutch basket, (you know about that coming from a DL1000)
but no issues other than vibes between 3-4k rpm, some have upgraded to the new 2014 model basket (I did).

Hi - Interesting info that hadnt come out before - I installed the sharealike clutch upgrade so the DL is really quiet now, it will make a great bike for someone as a weekend toy, ie - cheers !

It's worth noting that Rob is in the UK.

Welcome to the forum. No real problems with either the Gen1 (2010-2013) or the Gen2 (2014-present). The Gen2 has a number of refinements that make it better riding but there are some really good prices on the nearly identical Gen1 bikes.

The search function here works well for your research, and the other two makes have threads in the "Other Bikes" sub-forum.

::004:: from New Mexico USA! I am a new owner of a Super Tenere so I can't offer a whole lot of advice. I just finished a 5.632 mike trip and I can say that its very comfortable for me at 5'11" with a 32" inseam. I did quite a bit of research on the ST and decided that it was the bike for me. I'm very impressed with it. Personally, I would stick with a gen II for the added improvements and features.

I would suggest a Gen2 2014 onwards if you have the budget, nothing major but LOTS of small improvements that add up, especially cruise control IMO.

My old Gen1 is in a dealers, it has a few mods still in place including a custom dyno setup and Arrow exhaust system - about £1,000 to buy / setup and it runs very sweetly (about 12 BHP up on standard with very sweet fuelling) it also has MCT modified forks, SW Top Box Rack (Can take most makes of boxes) and really comfy Tony Archer seats, but is down south and up for £6750 - maybe a shade pricey for a 2011 bike, but it is a very good example.

Sorry to plug my bits for sale, but I also have a full set of luggage and Wilburs shock up for grabs so if you do get a bike and need such stuff this might save you a few quid.

Plenty of well priced S10's out there so you should have no problem getting something good with whatever budget you have ::008::

Greetings from Colorado, USA, and welcome to the forum.

61, 6'1" and the Tenere is more comfortable for seating than I had with my 2004 FJR and 2010 R1200RT. The cockpit just feels more spacious and comfortable.

The cruise control is a wonderful feature on the Gen 2 bikes and (based on the comments on this forum) the small improvements are probably worth the extra budget.
